The healthcare sector not only faces impacts from climate change but also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through resource procurement, service provision, and patient care. Globally, healthcare accounts for approximately 4.4% of total GHG emissions, and South Korea is among the major emitters. However, comprehensive data and strategies specific to GHG emissions in South Korea’s healthcare sector are currently lacking. This study analyzes GHG emissions in South Korea’s healthcare sector, comparing it with 10 major countries and the European Union based on Health Care Without Harm’s “Health Care’s Climate Footprint” report and the World Health Organization’s framework for low-carbon healthcare systems. Economic indicators CHE%GDP (current health expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product) and GGHE-D%GGE (general government health expenditure as a percentage of general government expenditure) were used to estimate healthcare emissions through a top-down approach. South Korea’s healthcare sector accounts for about 5.3% of the country’s total GHG emissions and roughly 2% of global healthcare emissions. Using CHE%GDP proved effective for accurately reflecting emission trends relative to healthcare expenditure. Additionally, many countries employ a hybrid approach that combines top-down and bottom-up methods for more accurate GHG emission estimates. This study identifies GHG emission trends in South Korea’s healthcare sector to support low-carbon strategies. It emphasizes a hybrid approach combining top-down and bottom-up methods for precise emissions assessment and targeted reductions in sub-sectors like facility operations, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. The findings provide a foundation for South Korea’s transition to a low carbon healthcare model, enhancing emissions reduction and goals.
