량치차오의 傳記文 『李鴻章』 연구 (A Study on the Biographical Text 『Li Hong-Zhang(李鴻章)』 of Liang Qi-Chao)

초록

중국 근대 전환기의 대표적 지식인 량치차오가 저술한 전기문 『李鴻章』은 19세기 후반 가장 중요한 정치․군사․외교 지도자 이홍장과 당시 격변하는 중국의 역사적 흐름을 상호 연관시켜 기술하고 평론한 새로운 유형의 중국 전기문이다.
본 연구를 통해 살펴본 바, 전기문 『李鴻章』의 가치는 두 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 하나는 중국의 전기문 역사상 구식의 열전 체재로부터 신식의 서구식 평전 체재로 전환을 시도한 획기적인 작품이라는 점이다. 사마천 이래로 중국의 전기문은 문학과 사학이 긴밀하게 결합된 특별한 글쓰기 형식으로 산문 작품이자 동시에 역사 기록이었다. 『李鴻章』은 전통을 계승하는 가운데 서사구조 면에서 分章의 방법을 사용하고 다량의 도표 및 관련 문건 등을 수록하고 특히 서술과 평론이 자유로이 섞인 다차원적 구조를 채택했다. 또한 문체 면에서 계몽주의․공리주의적 효용성을 갖춘 신문체로써 인물의 생애를 독자 눈앞에 생생하게 재현해내고, 또 이를 통해 중국 근대사의 흐름을 보다 잘 이해하고 감응하게 했다.
다른 하나는 내용적으로 중국 근대사의 가장 핵심적인 인물인 이홍장과 중국 근대의 크고 작은 여러 의미 있는 사건 간의 관계에 초점을 맞춰 격변하는 역사의 흐름을 논의한 참신한 평론이라는 점이다. 이로써 전기문이 歌功頌德에 머물지 않고, 역사학적 소임을 다함은 물론 정치적으로 대중들을 계몽시키는 목적의식을 수행할 수 있게 했다. 특히 이홍장에게 있어서나 중국 근대사에 있어서나 가장 관건이 되는 태평천국․염군의 난, 양무운동 및 청일전쟁에 대한 논의가 핵심적이다. 이를 중심으로 량치차오는 자신이 살고 있는 시기이자 근대 전환기에 정치․군사․외교적으로 가장 핵심적인 인물을 전주로 채택하여 저술함으로써 그 변화를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 관점들을 제공했다.
량치차오 사상의 핵심은 ‘新民思想’으로 집약되는 계몽주의이다. 사학과 문학에서 그리고 특히 정치에 있어서 그의 궁극적인 목표는 국민계몽․국가근대화였다. 때문에 전기문 『李鴻章』도 전주 한 개인을 서술하는데 그치지 않고, 시대와 전주의 관계를 중심으로 역사적 흐름을 평론했다. 이로써 당대 및 후인들에게 진화의 귀감을 제시하고자 했으니, 그가 주도한 新史學 즉 근대 사학의 관념 하에 저술되었다고 할 수 있다. 아울러 량치차오는 전기문이 산문 체재의 하나로서, 문학적 특성을 적절히 발휘하여 역시 대중들을 효과적으로 계몽시킬 수 있어야 한다고 여겼다. 이렇게 전기문의 사학적 지향과 문학적 지향은 근본적으로 국민계몽․국가근대화를 목표로 밀접하게 연계되었다. 그리고 결국 정치 지도자 량치차오는 전기문 『李鴻章』으로써 당시 내우외환 중에 어디로 가야할지 모르던 중국 민중들에게 나름대로 시대를 정확히 이해할 수 있게 하고 나아가 미래를 대비하게 하고자 했다.

영어초록

Written by Liang Qi-Chao(梁啓超), a representative intellectual of the modern period of China, 『Li Hong-Zhang(李鴻章)』 is a new type of Chinese biographical text that describes and criticizes the changing historical trends of China during that period in accordance to the most important political, military and diplomatic leader of the late 19th century.
As we have seen in this study, the value of the biography 『Li Hong-Zhang』 can be summarized in two ways. One is that it is a groundbreaking work in the history of Chinese biographical text that attempts to switch from an old-fashioned series of biographies to a new Western-style critical biography system. Since Sima Qian(司馬遷), Chinese biographies have been both prose and historical records in a special form of writing that closely combines literature with history. 『Li Hong-Zhang』 uses divide into chapters(分章)’s method in terms of narrative structure, contains large quantities of diagrams and related documents, and adopts a multi-dimensional structure, especially one in which descriptions and reviews are freely mixed. In addition, as a newspaper with an enlightening and practical utility in terms of style, it vividly reproduces the life of a character before its readers, and through this, it better understands and responds to the flow of modern Chinese history.
The other value is that it is a novel review discussing the turbulent flow of history, focusing on the relationship between Li Hong-Zhang - the most central figure in China's modern history - and various meaningful events of China's modern times. This allowed biographies to perform not only their historical duties, but also their political awakening. In particular, the discussion of the War of the ‘Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’(太平天國) and ‘the forces of Nian’(捻軍), which is the most important issue in Chinese modern history, is key. At the center of this biography, Liang Qi-Chao provided important perspectives on how to understand change by adopting and writing the most important political, military and diplomatic figures as the forerunners in the period of his life and the period of modern transition.
The core of Liang Qi-Chao's thought is the Enlightenment, which is summed up as ‘the thought of renewing the people(新民思想)’. His ultimate goal in history and literature, especially in politics, was national enlightenment and modernization. Therefore, the biographical text not only describes the individual main character, but also reviews the historical trend centering on the relationship between the times and main character. The book was written under the concept of modern historical study, which he led, as he intended to present a model of evolution to the day and to the latter. In addition, Liang Qi-Chao thought that biographical texts should be one of proselytizing, and that they should be able to effectively enlighten the public by properly exercising their literary characteristics. As such, the historical and literary orientation of the biographical literature was closely linked with the goal of national enlightenment and modernization. And in the end, political leader Liang Qi-Chao tried to make the Chinese people, who did not know where to go, understand the times in their own ways and even prepare for the future by reading the biographical text.
