초록

<Ssassirangi> is a game with a bet of cigarette or small amount of money between five male players. During off-seasons, they gather at one's house or at funerals, marriages, or housewarming parties to play with ‘cheol-toe' or 'hwatu'; meanwhile, singing 'numeral singing,' and 'situational singing.' Therefore, <Ssassirangi> is a game that combines actions and songs. Again, it is a style that consists of the folk games and folk songs.
The roles that <Ssassirangi> takes in everyday life can be classified into amusement aspect and folk song aspect. In this article, the roles in the amusement aspect will be discussed first; then, how such roles take shape in the folk song aspect will be observed. Such means of observation works well, because folk songs can be realized only as subordinate or partial factors of the general situation called games.
<Ssassirangi> is accomplished under certain conditions as follows. First, there should be five males gathered to play <Ssassirangi>. Second, allparticipants should play the game on equal terms. Third, the game should be played at a place totally isolated from the daily life. Under these conditions, <Ssassirangi>'s very significance resides in giving satisfaction to the people from temporarily deviating from their weary, repetitious lives.
The poems sung in <Ssassirangi> are not based on the home life, nor show any hint of relationships between people. Each poem only presents certain social plans. Though these partial presentations of <Ssassirangi> lack in social nature, the poems together secure their sociality after being sung repeatedly for 3~4 hours.
The narrators confirm the truths they already know and sometimes learns unknown facts from singing the poems, Then, they realize that the world echoes themselves; but they also understand and follow the worlds different from their own. This is a form of social participation in a positive position.
On the other hand, there are poems on some negative, controversial issues of the day. Each of these poems usually reveals the real names of the people concerned. This is a clear characteristic of <Ssassirangi> different from other folk songs, a phenomenon implying the deep awareness of social issues.
The social issues that the poems include are conducts of an immoral woman, plundering of property using social positions, squandering of fortune in gambling, and so forth. These issues become public through <Ssassirangi>.
