초록

Purpose: With increasing citizen’s interests in public design, the demands for citizen participation in public design is growing. The purpose of this study was to present a measure to plan expansion strategy for public design and local innovation by analyzing the implication of Living Lab as a methodology of crime prevention through environmental design urging the cooperation among multidisciplinary stakeholders and the citizen participation.
Method: This in-depth case study describes the development process of shadow-lighting system for improvement of walking environment safety in the case of Living Lab for crime prevention through environmental design. First, the related concepts such as Living Lab, crime prevention through environmental design, and citizen participation-based public design and second, the in-depth case study for the crime prevention through environmental design Living Lab based on citizen participation. Lastly, based on the results of in-depth case study described in the perspectives of crime prevention through environmental design and citizen participation design methodology, the effectiveness of Living Lab in public design was discussed. Result: The application of Living Lab in crime prevention through environmental design allows the effective implementation of program based on the practical awareness and demands by citizens, especially in the perspective of urban environment improvement, and, in the process of solving urban problems, is expected to enhance the citizens’ awareness of crime prevention activities and to affect qualitatively the reinforcement of local community. It is hoped that the Living Lab is applied broadly as a methodology for local innovation and social problem solving.
