초록

This paper explores the film Gran Torino as an example of how post-9/11 Hollywood films renegotiate national identity through their narrative time. In the case of Gran Torino,the director attempts to reconstruct national narrative in line with that of Reagan Era in order to intervene in current history by bringing diverse national narratives and memory of past, especially focused on Korean War and Cold War era so that the particular past can substitute for the general present.
While it raises questions about the possibility of individual identities, it also reveals the fundamental characteristic of the reenacting historical trauma that generates the ambiguous other. Hence, this paper would analyze the film with the method of discourses analysis mainly linked to memory, subjectivity and gaze. Through analyzing, this paper attempts to uncover the cultural translations of the forgotten war in relation to national identity in visual culture practice in view of politics of suggestion as well.
