카이로프랙틱 철학과 자연치유력: D.D. 팔머의 본유지능을 중심으로 (Chiropractic Philosophy and Natural healing force: Focusing on D.D. Palmer’s Innate intelligence)

초록

본 글에서 필자는 D.D. 팔머의 카이로프랙틱철학의 주요 개념인 본유지능(Innate Intelligence)이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지, 본유지능과 자연치유력은 어떤 관계가 있는지, 그리고 이 개념들에 근거한 카이로프랙틱이 기계론에 근거한 현대 의학과 질병 치료에 대해 어떤 차이점이 있는지, 그리고 결과적으로 본유철학에 근거한 카이로프랙틱도 하나의 의학적 방법론으로서 수용가능한지 논의하고자 한다. 카이로프랙틱은 형이상학과 기독교가 합쳐진 의료방법이다. 현재 환자를 치료하는 일종의 대체의학으로서의 카이로프랙틱은 매우 효과적인 치료, 특히 척추 질환과 관련된 치료에서는 기존 의학보다 더 월등한 결과를 보여주고 있다. 카이로프랙틱은 D.D. 팔머가 창시한 의학으로서 ‘본유’(Innate)를 중시하는 본유철학(Innate Philosophy)에 근거한 치료법이다. 카이로프랙틱에서 ‘본유’라는 용어는 본유적 우주지능(Innate Universal Intelligence), 이를 분유한 만물, 특히 개별 생명에 내재한 본유지능처럼 ‘지능’ 앞에 수식어로 사용하고 있다. D.D. 팔머는, 특히 본유지능을 줄여서 본유와 동의어로 사용하고 있다. 카이로프랙틱에서는 본유지능의 근원이라 할 수 있는 우주지능은 곧 신(God)과 동일한 의미로 사용하고 있고, 우주지능은 창조적 생명력으로서 형이상학에서의 최고 개념이자 종교에서의 최종 근거와 같은 역할을 한다. 우주지능의 한 부분인 본유지능은 영(spirit)과 동의어로 사용되어지고 있다. 본유지능은 혼(soul)을 매개자로 하여 물질적인 것에 작용한다. 여기에서 혼은 지적 생명(intellectual life) 혹은 생기력(vitality)의 다른 표현이다. 본유지능은 생명체의 완전성을 위해 생명체 안에 있는 생기력을 활성화시켜 생명체가 균형 잡힌 상태를 유지하도록 하는 중요한 역할을 한다. 그러나 기계론(mechanism)에 근거한 현대 의학은 생기론에 근거한 카이로프랙틱이 본유지능이나 생기력과 같은 개념들을 사용하고 있고, 이는 경험적으로 테스트 불가능하기 때문에 사이비 의학이라고 평가절하한다. 하지만 현대 의학의 편견은 두 의학의 형이상학적 차이를 잘 이해하지 못한 결과이다. 생기론이 우주지능과 우주지능의 목적을 따르려는 본유지능, 그리고 이에 합목적적인 만물을 상정하고 있다면, 반면 기계론은 단지 지적인 측면이 배제된 물질들 간의 인과관계만을 상정하고 자연현상, 더 나아가 생명현상을 설명하고 있다. 그래서 근대 철학과 과학에 영향을 받은 현대 의학에서는 카이로프랙틱을 거부할 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 그러나 현대 의학과 카이로프랙틱은 히포크라테스 의술이라는 하나의 뿌리에서 나온 의학적 방법들이다. 그래서 이를 무시하고 현대 의학의 관점에서만 카이로프랙틱을 평가하는 것은 공정하지 못한 태도이다. 두 의학적 지식은 각각 토머스 쿤이 말하는 패러다임(paradigm)에 해당하고, 따라서 정상 의학에 있는 현대 의학과 새로운 의학으로 등장한 카이로프랙틱은 둘 중 어느 쪽이 질병 치료를 더 잘 해결하는지 두 의학의 경합을 관찰하고 데이터들을 수집하면서 기다리는 신중한 태도가 필요한 시점이라 할 수 있다.

In this article, I will discuss what is Innate Intelligence as the main concept of D.D. Palmer’s Chiropractic philosophy, what is the relationship between it and natural healing power, what are the differences between modern medicine based on mechanism and Chiropractic based on vitalism on disease treatments, and whether Chiropractic is acceptable as a medical method. Chiropractic is a medical method that combines metaphysics and Christianity. Currently, Chiropractic as a kind of alternative medicine to treat patients shows superior results than modern medicine in very effective treatments, especially treatments related to spinal diseases. Chiropractic is a medicine founded by D.D. Palmer and is a treatment based on Innate Philosophy that values ‘Innate’. In Innate Philosophy, ‘Innate’ refers to [Innate] Universal Intelligence and Innate Intelligence. Universal Intelligence is the identification of God with Life-Force of Creation. It is the source of Innate Intelligence and serves as the best concept in metaphysics and the final basis in religion. It gives Intelligence to individual life and D.D. Palmer calls it Innate Intelligence. It is used synonymously with Spirit. In generally, It means that Innate Intelligence is Innate. This Intelligence acts on material things using Soul as a medium. Here, Soul is a different expression of intellectual life or vitality. It links Innate Intelligence with material things. So Innate Intelligence plays an important role in activating the vitality in life for the integrity of life, so that life remains in a balanced state. However, modern medicine based on mechanism devalues Chiropractic based on vitalism as pseudo-medicine because concepts such as Innate Intelligence or vitality are empirically impossible to test. The prejudice of modern medicine is the result of a poor understanding of the metaphysical differences between the two. Vitalism assumes the metaphysical concepts such as Universal Intelligence and Innate Intelligence. But mechanism only assumes the causal relationship between material things excluding intellectual aspects and explains natural phenomena. Therefore, modern medicine influenced by modern philosophy and modern science had no choice but to reject Chiropractic. But modern medicine and Chiropractic are medical methodologies that come from one root of Hippocratic medicine. So it is not fair to evaluate Chiropractic from the perspective of modern medicine. Both medical knowledge correspond to what Thomas Kuhn calls the paradigm, so modern medicine as normal medicine and Chiropractic, which has emerged as a new medicine, should be tested to see which one solves better on treating diseases. It is difficult to determine which of the two medicine will emerge as a new normal medicine because of a lack of current data. For now, it is time to observe the competition and wait carefully while collecting solid data to see which side better solves the problems of current and future diseases treatment.
