멜랑콜리 관점에서 본 「李生窺墻傳」 還魂 서사의 의미 (Meaning of reincarnation narrative in Isaenggyujang-jeon(李生窺墻傳) from the point of view of melancholy)

초록

본고는 「이생규장전」 후반부에 나타나는 최랑의 還魂 서사에 내재된 이생과 최랑의 심리상태를 멜랑콜리(melancholy) 측면에서 고찰한 것이다. 홍건적의 난이 일어나 무참히 살해당한 최랑이 모든 것을 잃어버리고 슬퍼하던 이생 앞에 다시 나타나 함께 동거하다 다시 이별하고 만다는 후반부의 주요 내용은 그 과정과 결말이 안타깝다 못해 불편하기까지 하다. 죽은 최랑의 혼령이 다시 돌아오게 된 이유와 그렇게 還魂한 최랑이 解寃도 못한 채 다시 이생과 영원한 이별을 할 수밖에 없었던 이유, 그리고 뒤 이은 이생의 무기력한 죽음의 이유를 이생의 병리 상태, 특별히 멜랑콜리에서 찾고자 했다.
프로이트는 哀悼가 대상의 상실로 인해 생겨나는 정상적 고통인 반면, 멜랑콜리를 자아 상실과 妄想에 시달리는 병리적 상태로 구분했다. 이 관점에 의거할 때, 이생이 폐허가 된 집에서 최랑을 보고 싶어하던 감정은 애도가 아닌 멜랑콜리한 상태였다. 전란과 아내의 죽음이라는 충격으로 인해 우울증과 정신 분열 상태에서 보인 이생의 행동과 감정 표현이 바로 그러했다.
이생은 극도의 상실감과 박탈감에서 오는 멜랑콜리한 감정에 휩싸여 있었다. 그렇기에 최랑의 환혼은 이생의 상실감이 만들어낸 육화된 정신과 욕망, 내지 의지 그 자체였다. 그런가하면 최랑이 다시 떠나간 후 얼마 지나지 않아 이생마저 죽어간 것은 최랑을 지키지 못하고 먼저 보냈다는 자기 상실감에서 오는 자기징벌과 같은 것이었다. 이로 볼 때, 「이생규장전」은 전란에서 살아남은 산 자의 정신적 충격과 멜랑콜리한 정신 상태를 고도의 서사전략으로 구현해 낸 문제작에 해당한다. 멜랑콜리 미학이야말로 산 자가 죽은 자를 기억하는, 독특하면서도 효과적인 서사 방식과 맞닿아 있다. 작가는 이생의 죽음과 관련해 공동체적 평가 자체보다 죽음에 이르게 된 내면 심리의 고단함에 더 큰 방점을 두고 멜랑콜리한 감정 세계를 교묘하게 허구적으로 재구해 냈다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine temperament of two main characters, Isaeng(李生) and Ms. Choi(崔娘), from the aspects of melancholy inherited in the narrative of reincarnation in the second half of work ‘Isaenggyujang-jeon(李生窺墻傳)’. If it is the first half that the love of the lovers are finished in marriage, the main content of the latter part is as follows ; 'Ms Choi was brutally murdered by thief when rebellion of Hongeon thieves was raised. So Isaeng who lost his wife and everything misses his wife very much. At this time, the reincarnated wife appears to him and tells him to stay with herself. The two of us live together and then again Ms. Choi leaves from Isaeng. After a while, Isaeng was so sore and he also died soon.' However, it is not easy to logically explain why and how the dead Ms. Choi has been reincarnated, why the reincarnation of the Ms. Choi has caused the separation of life and eternity again, Rather, the whole process and the ending of work are unfortunately inconvenient.
In this article, I searched for the melancholy condition of Isaeng from the sadness atmosphere which can be confirmed at the end of work, the reason of death that the life had to deal with as a catastrophe, and the reincarnation. If mourning is a normal suffering caused by the loss of the object, Melancholy means a pathological state suffering from self-loss and delusion. Freud said that while mourning is a normal pain caused by the loss of the subject, melancholy is a pathologic state suffering from self loss and delusion. From his point of view, Isaeing is a spiritual victim of an epidemic and can be considered a patient of depression and schizophrenia. In other words, the behavior and thinking of life in the second half of the work expressed his melancholic consciousness .
Isaeng was full of melancholic feelings from extreme loss and deprivation. Thus, the reincarnation of Ms. Choi was the incarnated spirit, desire, or will itself created by the feeling of loss. In addition, quick death of Isaeing was self-punishment that came from the loss of self that Isaeng was not able to protect his wife.
As such, ‘Isaenggyujang-jeon(李生窺墻傳)’ corresponds to the problem that embodies the psychological shock and the melancholy state of mental condition of a living survivor as a high narrative strategy. Melancholic aesthetics is a unique and effective narrative method that remembers the dead. With regard to the death of Isaeng, the writer has cleverly fictionalized the melancholy emotional world with a greater emphasis on the harshness of the inner psychology that led to death rather than the evaluation of the community itself.
