한인 디아스포라 아리랑의 원형과 파생관계 연구 (A Musical Analysis on Korean Diaspora Arirang Songs)

초록

오늘날 아리랑은 한민족을 대표하는 상징적 노래로 널리 알려져 있다. 아리랑 역사를 거슬러 올라가보면, 아리랑은 19세기 중기에 불렸다고 Homer. B. Hubert 는 Korean Repository( 1896)에 기록하고있다. 20세기 초에는 <아라렁>, <아령타령> 또는 <아리랑 타령>이란 노래제목으로 불리기 시작하였다.
아리랑이 널리 알려진 것은 1926년에는 나운규의 영화 주제곡으로 탄생한 영화주제곡 아리랑이 편사편곡되면서 부터이다. 나운규의 영화주제곡 아리랑은 서양음악의 영향을 받은 민요풍의 유행가로 현존하는 아리랑 노래 가운데 가장 대표적 아리랑으로 재구성 되었다는 역사적 의미가 있는 아리랑이다.
본 논문은 다양한 기록에 나타난 아리랑 노래의 가사, 선율구조, 리듬, 박자와 부점의 유무를 분석함으로 시대별 지역별 아리랑노래 특성을 연구함으로서 아리랑 노래의 음악적 변천을 연구 하고자 했다.
필자는 아리랑의 변천 과정과 계보를 구성하기 위해서 오늘날까지 다양한 형태를 가지고 있는 조선족아리랑과 고려인, 그리고 북한 아리랑 노래를 중심으로 연구․조사 하였다. 또한 시대적 아리랑 변천사를 사회적 변화구조에서 쉽게 이해 할 수 있도록, 1926년 나운규가 제작한 영화 주제곡이었던 영화주제곡 아리랑 까지를 전기 아리랑 시대로, 1926년에서부터 그 이후의 아리랑은 후기 아리랑 시대라고 나누었다. 노동요, 유희요의 성격을 띄웠던 전기 아리랑과 비교할 때 후기 아리랑의 특성은 독립과 애국이라는 사회적 욕구를 표출하는 두 단어가 가사의 주된 주제라는 점이다. 특히 한반도의 분단 이 후 중국,연해주와 중앙아시아에 흩어져 살아가게 된 한국인들이 불렀던 아리랑을 채보하고 분석함으로서 다아스포라 음악으로서 변천한 아리랑을 보존하고자 했다.
결론적으로 이 논문은 현존하는 다양한 아리랑 노래에 나타나는 한국인의 정서와 정체성을 음악인류학적으로 분석하였다. 전기 아리랑 시대에는 어떻게 전통선율과 리듬이 서양음악과 접목 되었나를 밝히고, 후기 아리랑 시대에는 서로 다른 사회적 환경에 따라서 변화한 아리랑의 음악이 어떻게 한민족의정체성에 진화를 가져왔는가를 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 연구 과정에서, 필자는 경상도 아리랑의 한 종류로 알려진 <영천아리랑>이 전라도지역 아리랑에서 유래하였다는 사실을 선율 분석을 통해서 밝혀내었다. 즉 <영천아리랑>은 <진도아리랑>의 원형에 가깝다는 것을 밝혔다. 아리랑이란 노래 연구는 음악사적 연구 가치 이외에 민속학적 의미를 가지고 있기 때문에 필자는 계속해서 본 논문에서 다루지 못하였던 1945년 이후 냉전시대 종식이전까지 남한에서 독자적으로 발전한 아리랑 연구를 강원도 전라도경상도 아리랑을 대상으로 계속 정진하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper attempts to investigate different musical features of Arirang songs that prevailed in various regions. On the basis of lyrics, the melodic structure, rhythms and beats as well as the existence of dotted notes I explored the changes made in a variety of Arirang songs popular in the places where a group of Koreans had been living in separation from South Korea between the peace treaty of the Korean War in 1953 and the end of Cold War in the early 1990s. In order to reconstruct the archetype of various Arirang songs and to investigate its development over time, I focused on studying the musical forms and their characters appeared in the regional Arirang songs including Diaspora Arirangs that have been singing in the current resident areas of the Korean descendents such as Joseonjog, Goryeoin and North Koreans because several different versions of various relatively old Arirang songs were able to be well preserved in these areas. These Arirang songs can be certainly used as valuable academic sources that provide clues needed to reconstruct the original Arirang songs. Moreover, in an attempt to promote readers’ understanding of the development of Arirang songs over time in the frame of social changes, I divided the time line into two periods in light of genre: The earlier Arirang period before the 1926’s movie theme song “Arirang”: the time of Taryeong; the later period after 1926: the time of popular songs. The most distinguished messages contained in the lyrics of the later Arirang songs are about “Independence and Patriotism”.
To preserve the old forms of Arirang songs to which little attention was paid I recorded the Arirang songs that were once popular and are still sung in the areas of Yeonbeon, the Marinetime Province of Siberia and Central Asia where numbers of Korean descendents have been living scattered from their respective hometowns. In conclusion, this paper explored a wide range of versions of Arirang songs in light of musical changes to investigate the role of the Arirang song that naturally led to forming the Korean cultural identities through the ethno-musicology approach.
In the earlier Arirang period, I attempted to reveal how traditional Korean melodies were integrated into western music by comparing two different Arirang songs documented while in the later Arirang period, I thoroughly examined several different versions of Arirang songs to depict the musical changes in light of social environments, and to find how these characters contributed to finding ethnographic factors that led the evolution of Korean ethnic identities. More importantly, I found that <Yeongcheon Arirang> which was known as one of Gyeongsang-Do Arirang is in fact originated from Jeonlla-Do Arirang. This is proved by the musical analysis that shows that <Yeongcheon Arirang is similar with the archetype of <Jindo Arirang>. It has been noted that studies about Arirang from the ethno musicological perspective are beneficial for those who endeavor to re-construct the history as well as musical tradition. Further research on the South Korean Arirang songs that have independently developed between the end of the Korean War and the end of Cold War era (1945~1991) will be followed by a study documenting the Arirang songs prevailed in the three different regions of South Korea: Gwangwon-do, Jeonlla-do and Gyeongsang-do.
