초록

이 논문은 신동엽 시의 멜랑콜리 표상을 연구하는 것에 목적이 있다. 신동엽 시에 나타난 멜랑콜리를 조명함으로써, 이념과 사상 이면에 감춰진 내면의 아픔과 의식의 원천을 짚어보고자 한다. 특히 멜랑콜리는 현존하는 모든 존재가 반응하는 자아의 감정적 현상이자, 신동엽 시를 추동하는 정서적 근원이 된다는 점에서 이에 대한 논의는 반드시 필요한 작업이 된다.
이 논문에서 주목한 멜랑콜리의 표상은 ‘짐승’과 ‘꽃’이다. 먼저 ‘짐승’은 주로 현실에서 도태된 존재를 표상한다. 이들은 주로 세상을 향해 울부짖는 존재로서 나타나는데, 이 과정에서 자아의 멜랑콜리가 드러나는 점이 특징이다. 특히, ‘개’는 병에 걸려 걱정하는 ‘환견(患犬)’이나, 미친개처럼 돌아다니는 존재로 시 속에 구현된다. 이러한 ‘미친개’의 표상은 벤야민이 언급한 ‘광견병 걸린 개’의 상징과 유관한 의미로 풀이된다. 나아가 ‘물새’를 비롯한 다양한 짐승들은 울부짖음을 통해 우울함 속에 내재한 열정을 산출한다. 신동엽 시의 ‘꽃’은 고독한 생명으로서 멜랑콜리를 드러내는 대상이 된다. ‘꽃’이 자신의 내면을 감추기 위해 발산하는 ‘향기’는 역설적으로 존재 본연의 고독을 드러낸다. ‘꽃’이 표상하는 숙명적인 고독은 벤야민의 ‘절대 군주의 우울’을 연상하게 한다. ‘꽃’이 드러내는 멜랑콜리는 단순히 내면으로 침잠하지 않는다. 신동엽은 ‘꽃’의 멜랑콜리를 통해 오히려 ‘무진한 정열’을 도출해낸다.
신동엽의 멜랑콜리가 주목되는 점은 ‘짐승’과 ‘꽃’이라는 표상을 통해 오히려 열정과 구원의 가능성들을 확인할 수 있다는 점이다. 신동엽의 자아는 우울과 슬픔에 빠져 있지만은 않는다. 자신에게 주어진 조건에 굴하지 않고, 이를 극복하기 위해 울부짖고 또 몸부림친다. 이러한 점에서 신동엽 시에 나타난 ‘짐승’의 울음과 ‘꽃’의 향기는 단순한 멜랑콜리의 표상이 아니라, 세상을 향해 전달하는 자아의 메시지나 다름없다. 다시 말해, 신동엽 시의 멜랑콜리는 자아의 의식을 추동하는 정서적 근원이자 시세계를 중심하는 정신적 소산이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the representation of melancholy in Shin Dong Yeob's poetry. By highlighting his expressions of melancholy, I aim to emphasize the source of inner pain and consciousness that underlies ideology and conception. Specifically, I clarify that melancholy is an emotional phenomenon of the self to which all existing entities respond as well as an emotional source that drives Shin Dong Yeob’s poetry. Therefore, discussion about this subject is imperative.
In this paper, I focus on the "animal" and "flower" as representations of melancholy. First, the animal primarily represents a being that has been alienated from reality. Animals typically appear as entities that cry out toward the word, which is characterized by the manifestation of a melancholic sense of self. Specifically, dogs are represented in poetry as hwan gyeon that are considered as either ill or mad dogs that wander aimlessly. The expression "mad dog" can be interpreted as symbolizing the "dog with rabies" described by Walter Benjamin. Furthermore, a variety of animals including water fowls represent the release of passion embedded in depression through howling. Shin Dong Yeob's flower is a subject that exhibits melancholy as a lonely form of life. The scent that a flower emits conceals its inner self, ironically conveying its own solitude. This fateful isolation represented by flowers is reminiscent of Benjamin's "absolute monarch's depression." The melancholy expressed by the flower does not simply sink to an inner self; rather, Shin Dong Yeob induces ardent passion through the melancholic representation of the flower.
Shin Dong Yeob's concept of melancholy is highlighted through the representations of the animal and flower in that one can confirm the possibilities of passion and redemption. Shin Dong Yeob's inner self does not simply dwell in depression and sadness. To overcome the ordeal, it wails and struggles continuously. The cry of the animal or the scent of the flower are not mere representations of melancholy, but expressions conveyed by Shin Dong Yeob's inner self to the world. In other words, melancholy is the emotional source and spiritual product that revolves around the plane of poetry that drives Shin Dong Yeob's work.
