피트 시거의 <아리랑> 수용을 통해 본 아리랑의 정치학 (The Politics of Arirang as seen the Pete Seeger's reception of Arirang)

초록

이 연구의 목적은 미국의 싱어송라이터이자 시민운동가 피트 시거 Pete Seeger(1919~2014)가 1950년대 초 녹음한 "Ariran"을 통해 아리랑의 다층성과 잠재성을 확인하는 데 있다. 아리랑은 한민족의 대표적인 노래로 널리 알려져 있다. 2012년 유네스코 세계인류무형유산 등재를 전후하여 ‘세계 속의 아리랑’ 혹은 ‘아리랑 세계화’라는 논의도 지속적으로 제기되고 있다. 이와 동시에 ‘아리랑의 원조’ 혹은 ‘아리랑의 맥’을 자처하는 지방 자치단체 간의 ‘문화적 경합’도 다각도로 전개되고 있는 형국이다. 이 연구에서는 아리랑을 둘러싼 역동과 상이한 주체의 문화적 실천을 ‘아리랑의 정치학’이라 명명하였다. 간결하고 서정적인 선율의 아리랑은 1926년 동명의 영화 주제가로 쓰인 이후, 자체의 내러티브를 지닌 채 강력한 전승력을 발휘하여 왔다. 이 연구에서는 피트 시거가 아리랑을 수용한 경위와 맥락을 짚어가면서 아리랑이 국경을 넘어 수용자의 문화권과 결합하는 방식을 규명하고, 이를 통해 글로컬(glocal) 노래 아리랑의 위상을 재사유하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다. 그 의미를 밝히기 위해 한국전쟁 전후 미국으로 건너 간 아리랑이 피트 시거의 앨범에 실리고 마침내 미국 포크 음악의 한 부류로 정착하게 된 맥락을 추적하고, 이를 피트 시거 개인의 음악적 행적과 실천 그리고 그가 택한 포크 음악의 장르적 관습과 관련하여 해명하고자 한다. 특히 1930년대 미 대중음악계 포크 음악 씬(scene)의 태동과 형성 과정, 195·60년대 포크 리바이벌의 실천 방식과 운동성이 피트 시거의 음악적 실천과 아리랑 수용의 주요한 토대가 되었다는 점을 주시하였다. 이 과정을 통해 아리랑은 수용자의 의지와 세계관과 결합하여 다양한 변종을 낳으며 그 내포가 풍부해지고, 궁극적으로 아리랑의 정치학이 심화되고 확장된다는 점을 확인하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to confirm the multi-layeredness and potential of Arirang through the "Ariran" recorded in the early 1950’s by American singer-songwriter Pete Seeger (1919 ~ 2014). As is well known, Arirang is a representative song of the Korean people. The debate about ‘Arirang in the world’ or ‘Arirang globalization’ has been continuously from around the time of the UNESCO listing ofArirang as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012. At the same time, ‘cultural competition’ between local autonomous entities that claim to be ‘the originator of Arirang’ or ‘vein of Arirang’ has been developed in various ways. This study named the dynamics surrounding the reception of Arirang and the diverse cultural practices of different subjects as ‘the politics of Arirang’. Arirang, a concise and lyrical melody, has been exhibiting a powerful force of transmission in its own narrative after it was used as the theme song of a movie of the same name in 1926. The purpose of this study is to figure out the way in which Arirang crosses national borders to combine with the cultural area of the recipients while exploring the course and context through which Pete Seeger accepted Arirang with a view to preparing opportunities to rethink about Arirang as a glocal contents.
In order to clarify the meaning, the context through which Arirang went to the USA around the era of Korean War, was contained in Pete Seeger's album, and settled as a repertory of performances will be traced and explained in relation to the musical trace and practice of Pete Seeger and the genre customs of folk music selected by him. In particular, that fact that the processes of fetal movement and formation of folk music scenes in the American popular music sector in the 1930s, and the method of practice and motility of the folk revival in the 1950s and 1960s became the main basis of Pete Seeger's musical practice and acceptance of Arirang was watched. The fact that, through this process, Arirang combined with the will and world view of the recipients to give birth to diverse variants while being enriched in its nest and ultimately deepening and expanding its politics, was identified.
