초록

연구는 마로니에북스에서 발간된 <토지> 결정판(2013)과, 이를 ‘원작’ 삼아 녹음한 윌라의 오디오북 <토지>(2021)에 대한 각각의 읽기들을 수행하면서, ‘읽기’에의 의미를 고찰해나가는 연구이다.
기실 최근의 오디오북은 그 태생부터 종이책을 의식하고 있는 소리로 구성된다. 그러나 오디오북에 대한 최근의 인식들과 그와 연결되는 종이책에의 인식들은 이 파생을 간과하며, 이를 ‘상반되는’ 매체들로 인식한다. 그러나 종이책 <토지>의 읽기와 오디오북 <토지>의 읽기는 서로를 의식하며-보완하며-호명한다. 본 연구는 문자텍스트에서 음성텍스트로 옮겨간 <토지> 읽기들의 층위를 면면히 나눔과 동시에, 그 나눔을 단절로 상상하지 않는다. 이 구분들이 연결되어 있음을 이야기하고자 한다. 본고는 월터 J. 옹의 논의들과 연관하여 오디오북 <토지>를 읽는 음성 배우의 낭독과 이를 듣는 독청자들의 청독을 가로지르는 문자-소리 사이의 ‘간매체성’을 논한다.
이에 따라 2장은 종이책 <토지>를 묵독하면서 발견할 수 있는 서술자의 대화성을 양각화한다. 이어 3장과 4장에서는 글말에 깃든 입말의 흔적들을 찾는 결과물로서 오디오북 <토지>의 서술자에 주목한다. 오디오북의 서술자는 종이책의 서술자와는 달리 묵독적 특성에의 소리 수행을 드러내는데, 본고는 이에 대하여 텍스트를 ‘닫힌’ 것으로 감각해왔음을 상기시키는 소리 수행이자, 그럼에도 완전히 소거되지 않은 <토지> 서술자의 대화성 수행으로 읽어낸다.

영어초록

Comparing two different types of media can easily lead to signifying their gap within their differences. A gap exists, and there is no doubt about it. This study aims to demonstrate that such a gap cannot always be constructed in disconnecting ways and that resulting differences are not constructed in a hierarchy. Being aware of this, the study focused on the existence of a narrator embodied in written and spoken language in the and audio book Land, respectively, and translated the focus into a connection between reading in silence and reading through listening.
Chapter 2 finds dialogism in the narrator of the paper book Land due to the speaker depicted as the most multi-natured character outside the events and inside the drama in Part 1 of the story. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the narrator of the audio book Land as an outcome of finding the traces of spoken language dwelling in the written language. Discovering that the voice actor playing the narrator of the audio book performed with a voice excluding emotions, the study focused on the fact that the recitation mechanism of the narrator in the paper book Land is based on reading from beginning to end to understand it. Chapter 4, in particular, focuses on the characteristics of audio books including convenience and will for finishing the listening commonly mentioned in statistical surveys and research on audiobook platforms as well as the responses of readers listening to audiobooks. It should note that reading through listening an audiobook is being settled into a way of offsetting the difficulties of reading all of a book to peoples.
It seems useless to find connections between things that appear to have nothing to do with each other. This paper is a symptomatic attempt at reading derived from looking at many different layers of reading fulfillment inserted between media. It may be possible to estimate the outline of bases, in which Land continues to be established as a closed text after many years of talking to readers beyond time and space limitations based on the entry of words in multiple layers, from this way of reading that seems irrelevant and useless. This study is an uninvited initiation of a conversation out of the anxiety that Land, which has spurred diverse conversations of many types among its readers for the last 50 years or so, might be read as a closed and complete canon within different reading patterns.
