식민지 시대 열녀 재현의 정치학: 총독부 기관지 <경학원잡지> ‘지방보고’란의 열녀 기사를 중심으로 (A study on the representation of virtuous woman in the colonial era : Focusing on articles about virtuous woman in the 'local reports' column of )

초록

본고는 <경학원잡지>의 ‘지방보고’ 기고란에 실린 열녀 재현의 양상과 식민지 지방 유림의 관계를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 열녀 기사가 집중적으로 나타나는 ‘지방보고’라는 기사란의 성격을 경학원 본원-지방 향교와의 관계를 중심으로 살펴보고, 지방보고 기사란에서 열녀라는 여성 형상이 지방 유림들에게 발견되고 재생산되는 과정을 살펴보았다. 지방보고 란의 열녀 기사는 특정 시점에 경학원의 주요 인사가 ‘열녀’를 언급한 바로 다음 호부터 등장하기 시작했으며, 초기에는 상호 유사한 기사들이 자주 나타난 것으로 보아 열녀 서사가 지방보고 주체들 사이에서 모방과 학습의 과정을 거쳐 차츰 활성화되기 시작했다고 보았다. 또한 지방 유림과 본원의 주요 인사들은 열녀 기사의 발굴과 재창작을 상호 자극하는 순환적인 구조를 갖고 있었음을 지적하였다.
또한 본고는 지방보고 열녀 기사의 생산 주체인 식민지 시대 지방 유림들의 사회적, 경제적 조건에 주목하였다. 이들은 총독부의 향교 재산 관리권 박탈 및 향교 조직 약화 정책에 심각한 압박을 받았으며, 동시에 식민지 근대 지식인과의 경쟁 구도로 인해 종래의 사회지도층으로서의 지위에도 위협을 느끼고 있었다. 이러한 상황 속에서 지방 유림들에게 ‘유교의 도’는 총독부에 의해 관리되고 착취당하는 식민지민으로서의 자신의 현실을 외면하고 열악해진 자신의 사회적 지위를 회복하게 해주는 유일한 근거였다.
결국 ‘지방보고’ 란의 ‘열녀’ 재현은 이러한 식민지 시대 지방 유림이 식민화되고 주변화된 존재로서 자기 정체성의 불안을 극복하기 위해 재소환한 유교적 표상이다. 이들 기사에서 특히 여성의 몸과 노동이 착취의 대상으로 인식되고 학대의 시선으로 그려지고 있는 것 역시 식민지 시대 열녀 재현의 생산층이었던 지방 유림들이 자신들의 식민성을 투사한 내부 식민지로 여성의 몸을 발견하고 있는 증거라고 보았다.

영어초록

This paper analyzed the relationship between the representation of virtuous woman published in an article column called 'local reports' of <the Journal of Kyeonghakwon> and the local Confucians in the colonial era. For this, the paper examined the characteristics of the article column called 'local report' by connecting them to 'the relationship between Central Kyeonghakwon and local Hyanggyo (鄕校, Confucian school). It also highlighted the process that female figures called virtuous women are found and reproduced by the local Confucians through the local reports column.
The articles about virtuous women in the local reports column began to appear from the next issue right after an important person of Kyeonghakwon mentioned 'them'. The point that similar contents frequently appeared in the articles about virtuous at the initiatory stage indicates the process that the local Confucians who produced articles of the local reports imitated and learned them. The paper examined the point that the local Confucians and important people of Kyeonghakwon created the cyclical production structure as they stimulated one another by finding and recreating the articles about virtuous women.
And the paper took note of the local Confucians social and economic conditions in the colonial era. They were much pressed by the Japanese Government-General of Korea's policy to weaken Hyanggyo and at the same time, were in fear of their position as the leadership of society that were weakened by competitive structures with modern intellectuals. 'Tao of Confucianism' was the only basis that makes them disregard their reality as the citizens of the colony and recover their social position which got to be low under those circumstances.
Eventually, the representation of 'virtuous women' in the 'local reports' column is the symbol of Confucianism that the local Confuscians in the colonial era recalled to relieve anxiety about self identity as the existence was colonized and marginalized. Among these articles, the women's bodies and labor that are especially expressed from the viewpoint of exploitation and abuse are proof that the local Confucians looked at them from the viewpoint of internal colony.
