초록

Full posterior scissors bite (buccal crossbite, Brodie bite) is a rare type of malocclusion and difficult for clinicians to treat. This case report illustrates orthodontic treatment of 15-year-old identical twins with posterior scissors bite and large overjet. One had a unilateral scissors bite with a constricted mandibular arch and the other had a bilateral scissors bite with broad maxillary arch and constricted mandibular arch. Both were diagnosed with Class II division 1 malocclusion. To correct the unilateral scissors bite, anterior bite plate and broad archwire were used with preadjusted edgewise appliance in the mandible. Although the scissors bite was unilateral, bilateral mandibular expansion was inevitable. To correct the bilateral scissors bite, a reverse rapid maxillary expander (RME) was additionally used to constrict the maxillary intermolar width. After achieving the molar occlusion, the maxillary first premolars were extracted and orthodontic miniscrews were applied to correct the maxillary protrusion and improve the anteroposterior relation. After the orthodontic treatment, the scissors bite was successfully corrected with a good occlusion, ideal incisal relationship, and favorable profile.
