이지란(李之蘭) 시조의 맥락과 함의 (The Context and Implications of Yi Chi - Ran’s Korean Poetic Song)

초록

이 논문은 텍스트가 의미론적 통일성을 갖는 맥락을 추론하는 맥락 연구 방법을 활용하여 고려 말기 시조 작품에 대한 해석을 새로이 시도하는 작업의 일환으로서 李之蘭의 시조 <楚山에>를 대상으로 한 연구의 결과를 발표하는 글이다. ＜楚山에＞는 몇몇 대중적인 시조 작품 해설서들에만 해석이 포함되어 있는데, 그 해석들은 하나같이 시적 상황에 대응하는 실제 상황을 고려 말기 국가 사회의 내부 정세에서 추론하고 있다. 하지만 시적 상황으로 설정된 역사적 상황과 寓意的 관계를 맺고 있는 실제 상황은 元明交替期 세계정세에 대응시킬 때 비로소 텍스트가 의미론적 통일성을 가지게 된다. 이것은 ＜楚山에＞가 이지란이 고려 歸附를 결정할 무렵에 창작한 것임을 말하는 것이다. ＜楚山에＞는 元나라 장수였던 이지란이 당대의 시대 흐름이 秦漢交替와 같이 역사적 필연에 의한 것이라고 인식하고 華에서 夷로 변모된 원나라와의 사대관계를 청산하려는 태도를 함축하고 있는데, 이는 원나라와의 사대관계를 청산하고 명나라와의 사대관계를 수립하였던 당대 고려 지배 세력의 현실 인식과 태도와 합치하는 것이다. 또한 당대의 현실에 대한 인식을 詩･史에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 역사적 상황을 통해 우회적으로 표현하고 있는 것은, 특히 출신과 학식에 따라 사람을 구분하여 차별하는 中華主義 世界觀이 고려인, 특히 사족들에게 외부적 특성은 夷로 비춰질 수 있지만 내부적 자질과 특성은 華에 속한다는 것을 알게 하려는 의도가 크게 작용한 결과로 해석할 수 있다. 이 새로운 독법은, 알게 모르게 중화주의 세계관의 근대적 모습이라 할 수 있는 西歐中心主義 세계관을 체현하고 있는 우리의 세계사적 변화에 대한 인식이나 사람을 대하는 차별적 시선을 근본적으로 성찰하는 계기를 마련해 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Recently I have concerned Sijo, Korean poetic song, of the period of dynasty change from Koryŏ to Chosŏn, and tried to explain their contexts in which each text is guaranteed the semantic coherence. This study, one of such efforts, aims to elucidate the reason why Yi Chi-Ran 李之蘭 (1331~1402), Jurchen-Korean, made Ch’osan-e 楚山에, belonging to Korean poetic song, by putting the theory of contextual study into the text and its extra-text materials. There have been several guidebooks which show the process and the result of interpreting the song. But they commonly seem to have a fallacy in deducing the real situation corresponding to the poetic one. The real situation does not refer to certain nationwide political events in the late Koryŏ, but to the historic change of the world in the time, dynasty change from Yuan 元 to Ming 明. Only the latter guarantees the semantic coherence of the text of which the situation is equivalent to the historic dynasty change from Qin 秦 to Han 漢. It implies that the song was composed while Yi Chi-Ran determined to surrender to Koryŏ and move to Koryŏ territories. The text in the context connotes his awareness that the reality of the world change in his time would result in the same historic change as the latter dynasty change in the not-too-far future, and his decision that he would no more serve himself to the authority of the Yuan Dynasty. His awareness of the reality and attitude to the authority of Yuan corresponded with those of ruling members’ especially Sajok 士族 (noble men or class)’s in the time when Koryŏ declared to cease her subservience to Yuan and announced their intention to worship the Ming Dynasty as the Lord of the Chinese (civilized) world. Also the fact that his awareness of the reality is presented through the former historic change implies that Yi Chi-Ran was concerned about discriminatory views and attitudes of the noble men whose society had historically been consciously and unconsciously full of world view based on Sino-centrism. Most Sajok 士族 have tent to classify individuals including the naturalized as well as the native into two sorts, the civilized and the uncivilized, according to their ancestries or origins and literacy in Chinese knowledge which was mostly based on Confucianism. In such a view of the world Yi Chi-ran was clearly to be treated as the uncivilized, so in order to make them know that he was a man of the civilized like them he composed a Korean poetic song based on Chinese literacy, knowledge of Chinese poetry and history. Contemporary Korean society is also full of Euro-centrism that is, we can say, the modern equivalence or transformation of Sino-centrism. So in daily life we meet many social issues that seem related to such an ideological form of discriminatory views. In this point, Yi Chi-Ran’s Sijo gives us an opportunity to reflect if our awareness of the reality and discriminatory views toward men and the world is right or not.
