초록

경북 안동의 이응태 무덤에서 나온 미투리는 그의 부인 원이엄마가 자신의 머리카락을 잘라 대마피와 섞어서 1586년에 만든 한 켤레의 신이다. 이 미투리를 만든 사람의 뜻과 정성을 생각하여 원이엄마 제작 미투리로 규정하고 이 글에서는 서술 편의상 ‘원이엄마 미투리’라 약칭하였다. 원이엄마 미투리는 원이엄마 편지의 또 다른 사부곡이다. 와병 중인 남편 이응태의 쾌유를 간절히 바라면서 원이엄마가 미투리를 만들어 준 것이다. 따라서 이 미투리는 원이엄마 편지에 담긴, 남편에 대한 ‘사랑과 이별의 정서’보다는 ‘남편 병환 쾌유 기원의 사랑’이 담긴 문화적 상징물이다.
원이엄마 미투리는 애초부터 신고 다닐 실용적 미투리라기보다는, 와병 중인 사랑하는 남편 이응태가 건강을 회복하여 신고 다니기를 염원하는 상징적 의미의 미투리였다. 그 근거는 미투리의 좌우 크기가 다른 점, 장신의 이응태에게는 미투리가 작다는 점, 미투리의 바닥을 단단하게 엮지 않은 점 등이다. 머리카락으로 만든 미투리’는 머리카락과 미투리에 각각 의미가 있다. 머리카락은 사람의 신체에서 분리된 것이지만, 유일하게 실용적인 물건을 만들 수 있는 분신이다. 유교사회에서 머리카락을 의도적으로 자르는 것은 불효였기 때문에, 특히나 여성이 스스로 머리카락을 절단하는 것은 중대한 결심을 한 상태에서만 가능한 일이다. 따라서 원이엄마가 자신의 몸에서 머리카락을 분리하여 남편에게 필요한 물품을 만들어준 것은, 자신으로서는 최대의 정성을 바쳐 남편의 쾌유를 비는 의미였다. 원이엄마 미투리와 유사 사례로는 1602년 유연당 김대현의 부인이 정성껏 만든 머리카락 짚신을 들 수 있다. 산청 현감으로 재임하던 김대현이 사망하자 그 부인이 장례를 도와준 산청 고을 주민에게 자신의 머리카락을 잘라 정성껏 짚신을 만들어 준 것이다. 두 사례로 볼 때 머리카락을 섞어서 미투리나 짚신을 만들어준 것은 조선 중기 양반층의 풍속이었을 가능성을 시사한다. 그리고 머리카락 미투리와 짚신에는 지극한 정성을 전달하고 간절한 소망을 실현하려는 주술적 의미가 포함돼 있다.
미투리는 살아있는 사람의 신체를 지탱하고 편안하고 안전하게 이동하도록 돕는 고급 신이다. 원이엄마가 미투리를 만들면서 자신의 머리카락을 잘라 대마피와 섞어서 엮은 것은 남편이 건강을 회복하여 신고 활보하기를 바라는 염원의 표현이다. 안타깝게도 원이엄마의 기원과 달리 남편이 사망하자 미투리를 폐기하지 않고 관에 넣어주었다. 또 원이엄마는 죽은 남편에게 마지막 이별의 만사(輓詞)와 같은 편지를 써서 관에 넣어주었다. 그 내용을 보면 자신의 꿈속에 남편이 찾아와서 모습을 보여주고 자세히 말해달라고 거듭 간청하고 있다. 그렇다면 이응태가 저승에서 이 미투리를 신고 이승으로 오는 구도가 설정되어있다. 결국 미투리는 저승에 있는 남편과 이승에 있는 원이엄마를 꿈속에서라도 연결하는 사랑의 수단이자 증표이다.

영어초록

The 'Mituri made of hair' from the tomb of Yi Eung-tae in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a unique pair of shoes crafted in 1586 by his devoted wife, known as Woni’s mom. These extraordinary shoes were fashioned by cutting her own hair and blending it with hemp bark. In recognition of the profound intention and sincerity behind the creation of these Mituri, this article refers to them as 'Woni’s mom-made Mituri,' abbreviated as 'Woni’s mom’s Mituri' for convenience. These Mituri represent more than mere craftsmanship; they symbolize a powerful cultural sentiment.
Woni’s mom’s Mituri is an expression of her fervent desire for the recovery of her ailing husband, Lee Eung-tae. Thus, these Mituri embody a cultural symbol of 'the love and hope for her husband’s health' rather than the conventional 'sentiment of love and separation' often found in letters like the one left by Woni’s mom.
These Mituri were not created for practical wear; instead, they hold symbolic significance, serving as a heartfelt wish for her beloved husband’s recovery and future well-being. Evidence of this lies in the fact that the left and right Mituri have different sizes, that they are too small for Lee Eung-tae, who was tall, and that their construction is not entirely firm. 'Mituri made of hair' carries profound symbolism for both hair and the Mituri themselves. Hair is separated from the human body, yet it is one of the few body parts capable of being transformed into practical objects. In Confucian society, the deliberate cutting of one’s hair was deemed contrary to filial piety and could only be undertaken as a momentous decision. Therefore, Woni’s mom’s act of separating her hair from her body to craft a vital item for her husband symbolizes her utmost sincerity and heartfelt wish for his recovery. A similar example can be found in the hair straw sandals carefully crafted by the wife of Yuyeondang Kim Dae-hyeon in 1602. Upon the death of Kim Dae-hyeon, who served as the county governor of Sancheong, his wife cut her hair and meticulously fashioned straw sandals as a gesture of gratitude to the residents of Sancheong county who had assisted with his funeral. These two instances suggest that the practice of using hair to craft Mituri or straw sandals may have been a custom among the noble class in mid-Joseon Dynasty Korea. Furthermore, both the hair Mituri and straw sandals carry magical significance, conveying profound sincerity and the earnest desire for wishes to come true.
Mituri are typically high-quality shoes that provide comfort and safety to the living. In the case of Woni’s mom, she cut her hair and combined it with hemp bark to create Mituri, expressing her hope that her husband would recover and wear them to walk vigorously. Despite her husband’s unfortunate demise, Woni’s mom did not discard these shoes but placed them in his coffin, along with a letter akin to a farewell elegy. In her letter, she desperately implores her husband to visit her in her dreams and communicate with her.
