서양 안무가들의 작품 속에 나타난 동양적 성향에 대한 연구 －에릭 호킨스의 <감시인과 여기서 지금>과 모리스 베자르의 <박띠>를 중심으로－ (About the Oriental Propensity which Appears in Work Inside of the Western Choreographers Research 1. －Emphasis on Erick Hawkins andMaurice Bejart －)

초록

전통적으로 서양은 동양을 매혹적인 대상임과 동시에 적대적 대상이라는 양단의 시각을 형성해왔다. 이러한 동양에 대한 시각은 미지에 대한 끊임없는 탐구와 관심에서 비롯된 신비주의적 관점이었다.
여기서 동양에 대한 관심에 있어서는 20세기 서양의 변화하려는 움직임과 맞물려 새로운 사상적 틀을 제공해주었고 문화적으로 지대한 영향을 끼치게 되었다. 예술가들은 사상적 사고를 예술에 접목시키며 독창적인 예술을 시도하였으며 이를 기점으로 사상적 사고와 삶은 사회전반으로 확산되었다.
춤에 있어서는 그 중심에 현대무용가 에릭 호킨스 와 현대발레의 거장 모리스 베자르를 언급할 수 있는데 그들은 동양적 영향을 안무세계에 도입한 이들이라고 할 수 있다.
본 연구는 에릭 호킨스 <감시인과 여기서 지금>과 모리스 베자르 <박띠> 작품 성향에 나타난 동양사상적 경향을 규명하는데 목적을 두고자 한다. 이를 통해 20세기에 동양사상에 영향을 받은 서양예술에 대해 살펴보고 동양사상이 어떤 방법으로 감각소재와 창조의 영감으로 개념화하였는지 고찰 해보고자한다.
에릭 호킨스는 <감시인과 여기서 지금> 작품에서 현대무용이 가져야할 방향을 제시하였으며 무용에 있어 모든 동작은 중요했으며 그는 자세와 변화의 조건에서 생각의 관념을 거부하였다. 동작에 대한 일정한 흐름의 생각에 대한 관련성은 감각기관의 중요성이며 이는 무용수와 관객에게 동작의 모든 관점에서 그들 자신의 육체에 느낄 수 있도록 하는 것 이다. 즉, 호킨스는 중요한 자각의 가진 동작을 보고 들의 육체를 사용하는 이유로 새로운 육체훈련과 새로운 동작기법에는 새로운 종류의 음악이 필요하며, 무용의 가장 중요한 주제라고 생각했기 때문이다. 사랑의 자유로운 흐름이 있는 동작 기법을 사용한 육체 훈련의 결과로 새로운 음악이 필요하고, 지성적이며 가벼운 것 보다는 육체적이다. 그는 음악적 구조 대신에 침묵 속에서 안무 작업을 하였으며, 무용구조와 음악적 구조의 독립성이 있어야 한다고 했다.
호킨스의 철학을 야기 하자면 개인적인 기발함에 의해서가 아니라 과학적 지식에 근거하여 무용수가 기본적인 동작 원리를 따른다면, 그들은 육체가 움직이는 방법과 능력을 넓히는 방법을 이해 할 수 있다고 하였으며 경직된 동작과 근육을 제거함으로써 스트레스를 피하는 방법을 육체에 이용한다는 것을 의미하고 있다. 또한 항상 움직이며, 활동하며, 무게중심을 빠르게 옮기고, 유쾌하고, 생기를 주고 바르게 하는 것을 자유로운 정신으로 표현하였으며, 근육의 무게 이동이 자유롭고 빠르게 흐를 때 만 빠른 동작을 완성할 수 있다고 하였다.
호킨스는 남녀의 사랑에 초점을 맞추어 작품을 안무 하였으며, 동서양의 다양한 철학을 수용하고 있는 작품으로서 호킨스 안무의 특성을 잘 표현한 것으로 보여 진다.
모리스 베자르의 <박띠> 작품은 철학자인 아버지의 영향을 받아서인지 동양적인 성향이 두드러진다. <박띠>는 동양적인이 아니라 동양이라고 보여지는 작품이다.
먼저 제목부터 ‘신들의 경지에 이르려는 열광적인 절대 귀의의 감정’ 이란 뜻으로 동양사상의 깨달음을 얻으려는 행위라는 뜻이다. 음악과 조명 의상과 분장 모두가 인도의 힌두교 중심적인 매우 동양적인 작품이다. 총 3부작으로 이뤄지며, 인도 신화에 관련된 것이다. 베자르는 카마수트라 동작과 인도춤 , 발레 테크닉을 한 번에 표현하였다.
인도신화는 그리스신화 보다도 더 세밀하고 흥미로운데 인도에서는 신화를 인간의 힘이 미치지 않는 영원한 미지의 세계의 이야기들로 모든 불가항력적 현상들이 신화적 대상이라고 하였다.
모리스 베자르의 주제 선택에서 동양의 종교에 대한 다양성을 찾아 볼 수 있고, 주제에서부터 동양적 성향이 보여 지는 것을 알 수 있다.
본 연구에서는 주요작품을 중심으로 분석하였지만 국내․국외 자료와 논문 등 에릭 호킨스와 모리스 베자르에 대한 문헌과 영상의 부족으로 인하여 작품에 대한 분석을 좀 더 깊이 있게 심층적으로 다루지는 못하였다. 따라서 좀 더 심층적이고 체계적인 동양사상적 성향을 분석하기 위해서는 그들의 작품에 대한 시대적 상황이 추후 연구에서 이루어져야 할 것 이다.

영어초록

Traditionally, the West has the dual views of Asia charming but hostile.
Such views developed from a perspective of mysticism resulted from the continuous exploration of and concern with the unknown things.
In the 20th century, Western people’s concern with Asia was combined with their energy for changes to result in a new framework of thoughts which would influence their culture greatly. Artists grafted such a framework onto their arts to attempt some original arts, and thus, their thoughts and life would spread across their entire society.
Erick Hawkins <Here and now watchers> and Maurice Bejart <Bhakti> or contemporary ballet virtuosos may well be positioned in the center of the contemporary dance. They were pioneers who introduced the Oriental influence to their choreographic world.
The purpose of this study was to examine the Oriental tendency shown in these two contemporary ballet virtuosos’ works, and thereupon, review the Western arts affected by the Oriental thoughts in the 20th century and analyze how the Oriental thoughts came to be conceptualized into sensuous subjects and creative inspiration In his works “Here and Now Watchers,” Erick Hawkins suggested the direction for the contemporary dance by emphasizing that every motion directions for the contemporary dance by emphasizing that every motion would be important in dance and refusing any conceptual ideas about the conditions of posture change . Namely, he argued that certain flows of thought about motion were related with the sensuous organs, and therefore, that dancers should have the audience feel for their bodies from every perspective of motion. Hawkins wanted to teach dancers how to use their bodies, assuming that they shouid be aware of their motions. He further contended that the reason why a live music should be used for the dance was that new motion techniques would require new kinds of music, and that music was the most important subject of dance. He said that when the bodies had been trained using the motion techniques featuring a free flow of love, a new kind of music would be required, emphasizing that the physical would more important than the intellectual and light. He used to choreograph his work in silence instead of a music structure, and he argued that dance structure should be independent from music structure.
Hawkins’ philosophy surmises that if a dance follows the basic principle of motion based not on personal peculiarity but on a scientific knowledge, he or she could better understand how to move the body, which suggests that rigid motion and muscle should be overcome to have the stress relieved. He expressed as free spirit the continued movement and action, the swift movement of the center of gravity, the pleasant, lively and correct emotion. He emphasized that a swift motion could be perfected when the movement of muscular weight was flowing freely and fast.
Hawkins choreographed his works, focusing on the love between man and woman. His works “Here and Now Watchers” is deemed to have accommodated divers Western and Oriental philosophies, and there for, it seems to express his choreographic characteristics well.
Maurice Bejart’s works “Bhakti” features an Oriental tendency, probably because he had been influenced much by his philosopher father. “Bhakti” is deemed an Oriental work rather than a work like the Oriental work. the title means “a passionate emotion of an absolute devotion to reaching Gods’ state.” In other words, it implies an act to be awakened. Music, lighting, costume and makeup are all Indian Hindu. It consists of 3 part in total, all related with some Indian myths. Bejart expressd Kamasutra motions, Indian dance and ballet techniques all at once. The Indian myths are more detailed and interesting than the Greek myths. The Indian people believe that their myths are the stories about the permanent unknown worlds, and that all inevitable phenomena are subject of the myths.
We can find a diversity of the Oriental religions in Maurice Bejart’s selection of subjects, and we can know that his subjects show some Oriental tendency.
As discussed above, we can witness some Oriental tendency immanent in Western choreographers’ works. This study could not analyze Hawkins’ and Bejart’s works in more depth due to lack of domestic and foreign literature and video date. So, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will analyze their works in more depth and systematically, focusing on their historical background.
