초록

본고는 빠알리어 접미사 tūna, tvāna, tvā에 관한 연구로, 『깟짜야나 문법』, 『목갈라나 문법』, 『삿다니띠』의 관련 규칙을 분석하여, 이 접미사들의 약칭, 문법 범주, 기능, 대체 등을 살펴보았다. 세 문법서는 tūna, tvāna, tvā를 ‘tūnadayo(tūna 등등)’라고 약칭한다. tūna 등등은 어근에서 파생된 1차 파생어를 만들기 위해 어근에 직접 적용하는 접미사인 kita에 속한다. 이 파생어는 ‘명사’의 범주에 속하지 않는 불변화사이다.
tūna 등등의 주요 기능은 앞선 시점의 행위를 나타내는 것이다. 한 행위주체가 행하는 두 개 이상의 행위 가운데 앞선 시점의 행위를 나타내는 동사 어근 뒤에 접미사 tūna 등등이 붙고, 이 접미사가 붙은 단어는 주로 ‘~하고 나서’, ‘~한 후에’ 등으로 번역된다. tūna 등등의 부차적 기능으로, 한 행위주체의 두 개 이상의 행위 중 본동사와 동시 행위를 나타내거나 본동사보다 미래 행위를 나타내는 것, 또는 다른 행위주체의 앞선 행위를 나타내거나 원인을 나타내는 것 등이 있지만 사용 빈도는 낮다. tūna 등등의 형태 그대로 어근 뒤에 붙어 단어가 완성되기도 하지만, ya, acca, svāna, svā, mma, yha, jja, bbha, ddha로 대체되기도 한다.
본 연구 주제와 관련된 규칙에 대해 『깟짜야나 문법』은 주요 기능을 다양한 예문과 함께 제시하고,『목갈라나 문법』은 문답을 활용하며, 『삿다니띠』는 다양한 활용 범위를 구체적으로 제시하고 있다.

영어초록

Words with the suffixes, ~tūna, ~tvāna, ~tvā often appears in Pāli Canon and western scholars have called them gerund, indeclinable (past) participle, or absolutive. This paper aims to study the abbreviation, grammatical category, function, and substitution of these Pāli suffixes, namely, tūna, tvāna, tvā, focused on the relevant rules of Kaccāyana-vyākaraṇa(KV), Moggallāna-vyākaraṇa(MV), Saddanīti(Sadd).
The suffixes tūna, tvāna, tvā in three grammar texts are abbreviated to tūnādayo(tūna etc.), tūnādayo belongs to kita, a class of suffixes that are applied directly to the verbal root to form primary derivatives. These derivatives are indeclinables that do not belong to the category of ‘noun’ that is declinable.
The main function of tūnādayo is to express the preceding action in time. Out of two or more actions performed by one doer, tūnādayo are applied after the verbal root denoting the preceding action, and the words with this suffix are mainly translated into ‘having done’ and ‘after doing’. With regard to the secondary functions, the suffixes are used to denote the concurrent action of one doer, the future action than the main verb, the preceding action of different doers, or cause, but the frequency of use is low. And those suffixes are sometimes substituted by ya, acca, svāna, svā, mma, yha, jja, bbha, and ddha in some cases.
With regard to the grammatical rules related to the subject of this study, KV presents main function along with various examples, MV uses questions and answers to enable a good understanding of the function of rules, and Sadd specifically presents various ranges of use, therefore it was possible to examine tūnādayo in various ways of the three grammar texts.
As the final process of this study, both suitability and fallacy of the modern term of words ending in tūnādayo were examined, through this process, the grammatical range and feature of words ending in tūnādayo became manifest. And one thing is clear that the suffix-centered description in KV, MV, Sadd regarding the grammatical topics such as tūnādayo are more accessible than to try to correspond to existing English or Korean grammatical categories.
