초록

본 논문의 목적은 요한복음 3장에 나오는 니고데모 이야기를 분석하여 회심의 성서적 의미가 ‘위로부터 남’이라는 점을 밝히고, 나아가 그러한 점이 목회와 선교의 현장에서 갖는 의미를 살피는 것이다. 이 목적을 위해 본 논문은 다음과 같이 진행한다: (1) 등장인물 연구―니고데모가 등장하는 세 본문(3:1-16; 7:47-52; 19:38-40)을 살핌으로써 니고데모를 평가한다. 그는 예수로 하여금 ‘회심’에 관한 심오한 담론을 펼치도록 정황을 설정하지만, 이해와 오해 사이를 오가며 갈등의 성향을노출하는 미묘한 인물의 한 전형일 뿐이다. (2) 표적과 회심―예수에대한 니고데모의 이해는 표적에 근거하지만, 예수께서는 표적의 사람을 믿지 않으셨다. 표적은 사람을 ‘위에’ 속하도록 하지 못한다. 니고데모가 필요로 하는 것은 표적이 아니라 회심이다. 그는 이를 통해 “표적의 사람”이 아니라 “믿음의 사람”이 될 수 있다. (3) 거듭 남과 위로부터 남 ―3장 3절의 “거듭 남”에 해당하는 희랍어는 ‘게네데 아노덴’(γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν)인데 이는 “위로부터 남”이라는 뜻이다. 니고데모는사람이 모태로 들어갔다가 두 번째로 나는 ‘거듭 남’을 묻지만, 예수는성령으로 새로워져 위로부터 나는 것을 말씀하신다. (4) 위로부터 나는것이란 (a) 과격하게 세상과 결별하고 ‘위에’ 속하는 것이고, (b) 예수를영접하고 포도나무이신 예수께 붙어 있는 것이며, (c) 성령을 받아 영으로 나는 것이다. (5) 회심의 신학 ― (a) 회심은 심령의 전환과 개인의변화라는 개인주의적 사건인 동시에, 공동체 사건으로서 목회를 성장시키고 교회 공동체를 성숙시키는 집단적 사건이다. (b) 회심은 세상과의단절을 전제한 심령적 사건이지만 세상 안에 남아 “진리로 거룩하게하는” 윤리성을 갖는다. (c) 회심은 일상과 제도를 넘는 카리스마적 사건인 동시에 세례의 예전 안에서 ‘구조’ 안으로 통합시키는 사건이다.

This study analyzes the Nicodemus story in John 3:1-16 to show that the biblical meaning of Christian conversion in the story is ‘to be born from above’ rather than ‘to be born again’ or ‘to be born anew.’ This study eventually aims at an application of the meaning of conversion to the field of ministry and campus mission.
This study begins with an analysis of ‘characters’ in the Gospel of John. This section investigates three texts (3:1-16; 7:47-52; 19:38-40)of Nicodemus for an evaluation of the Gospel character Nicodemus.
Even though he opens a situation Jesus gives a discourse of Christian conversion, he is but a typical figure who is just between understanding and misunderstanding of the meaning of conversion.
The second section of this study deals with the agenda of ‘signs’and conversion. Nicodemus' understanding of Jesus is based on ‘signs.’But Jesus does not believe in those of ‘sings’ (2:23-25). What Nicodemus needs is not ‘signs’ but conversion.
The third section of this study deals with the biblical meaning of Christian conversion in the discourse of Jesus for Nicodemus. The Greek words for conversion in John 3:3 is γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν, which is usually translated into either “born again” or “born anew.” However,the connotation of ἄνωθεν is not only “again” but also “from above.”Reading this verse within the whole context of Gospel, Jesus definitely meant “born from above” for Christian conversion.
“To be born from above” means to radically separate from the world and to belong to the above. It also means to accept Jesus personally and to remain in him as the true vine tree, and lastly to be born of the Holy Spirit.
The theology of the Christian conversion is in a tension. (1) It is not only a personal experience which includes a spiritual change of an individual, but also a collective one in which all the members of the church have to share the same experience for ministerial growth as well as personal maturity of individuals. (2) It is a spiritual event for a separation from the world, and it is also an ethical event in which an individual sanctifies oneself in the truth 'in' the world. (3) It is a charismatic event beyond routine and institution; It is at the same time a community event which integrates a converted into the ‘structure’of the church in the liturgy of baptism.
