백석 시집 『사슴』의 시편을 읽는 또 하나의 방법 (Rereading the Works of 『Deer』)

초록

백석에 관한 그간의 연구는 크게 세 단계를 거쳐 왔다. 그 시작은 이숭원, 고형진, 이동순 등에 의해서였다. 80년대 초부터 이분들은 백석의 중요성에 대해 알고 그의 작품을 문학사 안으로 끌어들이기 위해 노력했다. 두 번째 단계는 1988년의 해금(解禁)을 필두로 각 대학원에서 쏟아지기 시작한 학위 논문들을 꼽아야 한다. 마지막 단계로는 90년대부터 시작된 다양한 형태의 전집, 정본 혹은 원본 그리고 해설서 편찬 작업을 꼽을 수 있다. 이 세 단계의 백석 연구사에서 가장 중요한 영향력을 가진 것은 세 번째이다.
그런데 이 과정에서, 1차적으로 이동순, 송준 등의 초기 연구자들이 작품에 사용된 어휘들의 의미를 정확한 근거 제시 없이 풀이하는 잘못을 보였다. 이어서 다양한 출판사, 편집인, 연구자들이 이를 확대 재생산하였다. 마지막으로 고형진, 이숭원 선생들이 나서서 일관된 풀이로 연결 지으려 노력하였다. 그런데 백석 문학에 관한 이러한 다양한 연구와 관심에도 불구하고 어휘 풀이는 여전히 제각각이다. 그래서 현재의 백석 연구 현장은 같은 어휘를 쓰고 있는데도 의미하는 바가 전혀 다른 이상한 소통의 장이 되어 있다.
따라서 연구자들이나 편집자들은, 근거를 명확히 제시하지 않은 채 한 가지 의미만을 소개하는 글이나 책을 더 이상 만들어 내서는 안 된다. 각각의 의미들을 다 소개하고 자신이 지지하는 의미를 그 이유와 함께 제시해야만 한다. 단 하나의 해설만이 존재할 수 있다는 생각을 버리는 것이 문제 해결의 지름길이기 때문이다.

영어초록

Previous studies on Baek Seok have passed through the following three stages, taken as a whole. The first stage was initiated by Lee Soong-won, Ko Hyung-jin, and Lee Dong-soon. Since the early 1980s, those professors have recognized the importance of Baek Seok and tried to include his works into the Korean literary history. Then, the second stage started with the various doctoral theses on Baek Seok which have poured into several Graduate Schools of Literature since the ban on his poetry was lifted in 1988. As the final third stage, we can point out the compilation work of various forms of the complete series, the originals, and commentary books of Baek Seok’s poetry. Out of those three stages, the third one is the most important in the study of Baek Seok’s works.
In this process, however, the early researchers like Lee Dong-soon and Song Joon primarily have made mistakes such as interpreting the meanings of Baek Seok’s poetic words as they pleased, without giving accurate bases for those interpretations. And various publishers, editors, and researchers exacerbated those mistakes. But in the end, professors like Ko Hyung-jin and Lee Soong-won tried to rectify those mistakes by presenting consistent interpretations of the poetic words. By the way, despite the various research on and interest in Baek Seok’s literature, the interpretations on his poetic words are still inconsistent for almost every literary professors and critics. Thus the study site of Baek Seok’s literature has become an unrealistic communication site where the same vocabularies used in the same poems are construed quite differently.
Therefore, researchers or editors should not publish books which introduce only one meaning of a vocabulary or a sentence without providing a clear basis for that interpretation. That is, commentary books on poetry should introduce plural meanings of a poetic word, and should present only one of them which the critics think the most appropriate, with the reason for choosing that meaning as the most suitable one. That’s because dismissing the idea that there should exist only one explanation for a poem is the shortcut to solve the problem through.
