한국 앵포르멜 미술의 ‘또 다른’ 의미 (Another Meaning of Korean Informel)

초록

이 논문은 주류문화의 수용으로 이루어진 한국 앵포르멜 미술을 가능한 수용자 주체인 한국인의 시선으로 접근해보고자 하는 시도이다. 앵포르멜이 등장한 한국의 1950년대 후반은 일제강점기와 6.25를 거친 시기로서, 전근대적인 체제에 대한 개혁의지와 밖으로부터 급속히 유입되던 선진문화에의 요구가 만나는 시기였다. 이것이 미술에서는 보수적 미술제도 특히 국전에 대한 저항의식과 구미 경향의 적극적인 수용으로 나타났다.
이에 따라, 한국의 앵포르멜은 순수한 형식을 넘어 체제개혁의 기호로서의 특성이 두드러진다. 그 운동을 이끌어 간 것이 개별 작가들이라기보다 현대미술가협회라는 집단이었으며, 이들에게 미학적 혁신은 곧 정치적 혁신을 의미하는 것이었다. 그 후속 세대들에 의한 1960년의 가두전은 그러한 정치적 국면을 드러내는 단적인 예로, 이는 미술을 통한 가두시위에 다름 아니다.
한국 앵포르멜은 또한 미국 추상표현주의와 프랑스 앵포르멜의 혼성물이다. 이는 선진 문화를 받아들이는 것이 자존의 조건이 되었던 제3세계 문화의 독특한 국면이다. 운동 초기에는 주로 시각자료를 통해 미국 추상표현주의가, 운동이 진행됨에 따라 주로 프랑스의 것이 개념과 이론의 측면에서 수용되었다. 시각적으로 수용된 미국 문화가 프랑스의 개념을 통해 이해되었던 것이다.
이처럼 한국 앵포르멜은 운동의 성격과 문화혼성의 양상을 통하여 주류와는 ‘또 다른’ 의미를 드러낸다. 이는 그것이 당대 한국의 특수한 지정학적 위치에서 기인한 특수한 요구에 의해 촉발되었으며, 따라서 매우 선별적이고 자의적인 수용의 과정을 거쳐 만들어졌다는 점을 시사한다. 결국, 한국 앵포르멜은 미국 추상표현주의와 프랑스 앵포르멜 사이에서, 그 둘과 다양한 방식으로 연계되면서도 둘 중 어느 한 쪽에도 완전히 속하지 않는, ‘또 다른’ 종류의 전후 추상미술로서의 위치를 확보하게 되었다.

영어초록

This thesis attempts to approach Korean Informel whose formation was based on the reception of the dominant mainstream culture of the time from the perspective of the Koreans who were the subjects of the reception. Korean Informel emerged in the second half of the 1950s when Korea had just survived the Japanese occupation and the Korean War. During these years an encounter occurred between the need to reform the old system and the demand for the advanced culture which was rapidly being introduced. This led, in the field of art, to the acute resistance to the conservative art institution, especially to the annual Korean Art Exhibition and the rigorous reception of western tendencies By this reason, Korean Informel became to be a visual language for the reformation of the system beyond being pure form-oriented. This is attested to by the fact that the Korean Informel movement was led by the Korean Association of Modern Artists rather than individual artists. For them, aesthetic renovation meant political renovation. This can be exemplified by the street exhibition in 1960 by their subsequent generation, and it was nothing but a street protest via art.
The other aspect of Korean Informel can also be found in the fact that it was a hybrid culture of Abstract Expressionism from America and l’Informel from France. This reflects a unique aspect of the third-world culture that the importation of the advanced culture was necessary for its self-existence. In the early years of the movement Abstract Expressionism was introduced chiefly by means of visual materials. In the later years of the movement, l’Informel of France was adopted in terms of concept and theory. In other words, American visual culture was understood through French concepts.
In short, Korean Informel came to have ‘another’ meaning different from that of the mainstream abstract art of that time owing to the nature of its movement and the aspect of cultural hybridization. This is because it was triggered by the specific demand elicited by the geopolitical situation of Korea at that time and thereby was developed through a selective and arbitrary process of importing those tendencies. In-between American Abstract Expressionism and French Informel, Korean Informel secured its place as ‘another’ mode of postwar abstract art that simultaneously was related to and distanced itself from the two tendencies.
