천주교 박해 체험의 서사화 - ‘군난 때 미담’의 전개와 의미 - (Narrative representation of Catholic persecution experience – the development and the meaning of 「Gunnan Midam」(Praiseworthy story in the persecution era) -)

초록

본고는 ‘군난 때 미담’을 학계에 소개하고, 군난 때 미담의 등장배경과 전개 및 그 문학적 특성을 고찰하였다. ‘군난(窘亂)’이란 천주교 박해 시대를 일컫는 용어다. 일제시대 대표적인 종교지였을 뿐 아니라 한국의 최장수 잡지이기도 한 『경향잡지』는 1928년 11월호(통권 650호)부터 1929년 5월호(통권 661호)까지 ‘군난 때 미담’ 난을 개설하여 14회에 걸쳐 조선을 배경으로 한 미담 13편을 발표한다. 본고는 군난 때 미담을 군난 서사 문학의 하나로 보고, 그 출현배경과 특성들을 분석하였다.
1928년을 전후해서 일어난 조선 천주교회의 현지화 정책, 1925년의 한국천주교회 순교자 79위 시복식을 전후해서 고조된 순교자 및 순교성지에 대한 관심, 무엇보다도 조선 교회 공동체 안에서 오래 전부터 이어져온 순교자의 삶을 기록해 온 전통 및 순교자들에 대한 기록의 출판이 1911년 『경향잡지』의 발간과 더불어 시작된 ‘미담’ 난의 연속성 속에서 조선 천주교회의 박해 시절을 배경으로 한 ‘군난 때 미담’의 출현을 가능하게 했다. 특히 조선의 미담을 기술하면서 군난 시기를 배경으로 한 데에는 조선의 천주교회가 선조들의 순교와 박해시절 신앙생활에 대한 자부심이 컸음을 알 수 있다.
군난 때 미담의 주요 내용은 군난 시절의 어려움을 어떻게 극복했는가를 핵심 주제로 신앙에 대한 열정, 고난을 피한 일화, 외교인이 세례담, 신부들의 고생담 및 성지소개 등이다. 군난 때 미담은 한 개인의 순교 성인들의 삶이나 기적보다는 일반 천주교인들의 평범한 일상에 주목하였다. 박해시절을 다루면서도 비극적 분위기나 비극적 결말보다는 언어유희와 대화를 통해 독자들에게 흥미와 감동을 줄 수 있었으며, 고난을 극복한 신앙의 지혜를 전하고자 하였다. 저자를 밝힌 작품이 등장하면서 이후 개인 창작물로서의 군난 소설로의 가능성을 보여주기도 하였다. 1920년대 출현한 군난 때 미담은 이후 군난 소설 등 한국 천주교 군난 서사 문학의 토대가 되었다.

This article made an introduction of ‘Gunnan Midam (Praiseworthy story in the persecution era)’ to the academic world, and considered the background of emergence of it, the development and the literary nature. The term, ‘Gunnan(窘亂(Praiseworthy story in the persecution era)’ means the period of persecution of Catholic.
The magazine, 『the Kyunghyang magazine』, which is not only the representative religious magazine in Japanese colonial period, but also the longest-lived magazine in Korea, opened the section for 「Gunnan Midam」 (Praiseworthy story in the persecution era) and announced 13 Midams set in Joseon over 14 times from the November issue (Vol.650) of 1928 to the May (Vo. 661) of 1929 .
This paper considered 「Gunnan Midam」(Praiseworthy story in the persecution era) as Persecution narrative literature and analyzed its background of appearance and the nature.
The policy of setting up the Joseon Catholicism was created before and after 1928. People became interested in the martyrs and the Martyrs’ Site before and after the beatification of 79 catholic martyrs in Korea on 1925. Above all things, the section of 「Midam」 (Praiseworthy story) was going on since the publication of 『the Kyunghayang magazine』 in 1911, in addition, the tradition of keeping to record martyr’s life in the Joseon Catholic community for a long time and the publication of the records on the martyrs have enabled 「Gunnan Midam」 to emerge against the persecution of Catholic.
As seeing why the description of the Midam in Joseon was focused especially on the persecution era, we can understand that the Catholic Church in Joseon had higher self-respect pride in the martyrdom of ancestors and their religious life during the persecution era.
The descriptions carried on a passion for faith, an episode of avoiding hardship, a story of baptizing an unbeliever and a recital of priest, etc. based on how the difficulties were overcome in the persecution era. The Midam (Praiseworthy story) was focused on the ordinary life of general Catholics rather than an individual life of a martyr or a miracle in the persecution era. Even if it described the persecution ear, it was able to give the readers interest and happiness through a play on words and communication rather than a tragic mood or a tragic ending. It tried to convey wisdom of overcoming trouble.
It showed the possibility of a Gunnan novel as a individual creative work since the work was emerged, with the author’s identity. The Gunnan Midam has provided a foundation for persecution narrative literature of Korean Catholic such as a Gunnan Novel since it emerged in 1920’s.
