홍일선의 농민시에 나타난 ‘땅’에 관한 고찰 (The Study for Land Motif in Hong Il－seon’s Peasant Poetry)

초록

본고는 홍일선의 시에 나타난 ‘땅’ 모티프가 ‘사람’ 또는 ‘동․식물’과 더불어 일체적 동일성의 관계망을 이루면서 농민적 삶의 현실을 고발․비판하는 대결의식과 농촌적 서정성을 그려내는 원형질적인 요소로 기능하고 있음을 확인했다.
‘땅’은 사람과의 관계망에 따라서 그 의미가 달라지는데, 홍일선의 시에서는 ‘농민’과 ‘민족’이라는 두 가지 요소와의 관계에서 기본적으로 ‘농토’와 ‘영토(국토)’라는 의미로 사용되고 있다.
첫째로 농민과의 관계에서 보면, 땅은 본래 생산력을 가진 삶의 젖줄로서 농민에게 어머니와 같은 존재이지만, 홍일선의 시에서는 농민들의 분노와 슬픔의 상관물로 변주되어 있다. 그것은 주로 도시 자본가나 정부와 관료 등의 반농민적 인간들의 부도덕한 매개작용에 의하여 ‘어둠의 땅’으로 의미가 변환되어 나타난다. 이 ‘어둠의 땅’이 거느리고 있는 의미적 유사항들은 ‘남의 땅’, ‘피 흘리는 땅’, ‘빈 땅’, ‘언 땅’, ‘핏발선 땅’, ‘탄식의 땅’, ‘애원의 땅’ 등이다.
다음으로 민족과의 관계에서 보면, 땅은 본래 조상으로부터 물려받은 민족의 보금자리이지만, 홍일선의 시에서는 통일지향의 민족의식으로 인하여 ‘분단의 땅’ 또는 ‘매판의 땅’으로 그려지면서 반외세 자주의식을 전경화하는 모티프로 기능하고 있다. 그러나 과잉된 비현실적 관념화로 인하여 비발전적 국수적 태도와 함께 논리적 모순과 억지, 현실에 대한 극한의 분노, 거친 욕설, 비판이나 투쟁과 그에 대한 아지프로 등의 한계를 노정하고 있다.
이처럼 사람과의 관계에서 변주된 땅의 의미는 ‘동․식물’의 경우에도 그대로 적용되고 있다. 그러므로 구조적 모순에 희생되어 힘겨운 삶을 이어가야 하는 사람과 마찬가지로 동․식물들도 ‘어둠의 땅’에서 어렵게 생존하면서 농민과의 운명적 일체성을 가지고 형상화된다. 동물 모티프로는 ‘검은 땅’, ‘분단의 땅’, ‘매판의 땅’에 살고 있는 사람(농민)들과 일체를 이루면서 고발, 비판, 투쟁, 등의 대결의식을 형상화하는 중요한 이미지로 기능하고 있다. 한편 식물 모티프는 농민들과 희로애락의 정서를 교감하는 대화상대로서 현실극복의 지혜까지도 함께하는 동반자적 일체감을 형상화하는 객관적 상관물로서 애정과 그리움의 표상이 되어 ‘농촌적 서정성’을 구축하는 대표적 이미지로 기능한다.
농민시인 홍일선이 읽은 땅의 현실적 의미는 쉽게 돌아가 안길 수 있는 따뜻한 품이 아니고, 살아가기 어렵고 불편한 ‘어둠의 땅’이었다. 그것은 이 나라의 구조적 모순이 농민과 땅의 원만한 관계망을 형성하지 못하도록 작용한 결과이다. 그 갈등구조의 양상이 홍일선 시의 세계이다.

영어초록

This study briefly considered the formation of the meaning structure for ‘land’ that is the core motif in the peasant poetry of Hong Il－seon, folk and literary peasant poet, in 1980’s. The ‘land’ is making the whole network of identification with human beings or animals and plants in Hong Il－seon’s poetry. Simultaneously, it confirmed the duty function as an essential constituent which shows the confrontation consciousness that points out and criticises the reality of peasantry life and rural lyricism. In short, it’s like the following.
First, ‘land’ has various kinds of meaning according to its relation with human beings. However, it is basically expressed by ‘farmland’ and ‘territory’ in that it has the properties of both ‘peasant’ and ‘race’ in Hong Il－seon’s poetry.
Second, focusing on the relation with peasants, it is served as the correlative of their resentment and sorrow. It’s mainly expressed by the changing meaning with ‘dark land’ due to the absurd auxiliary function of anti－peasantry people including civil capitalist, government, and officials etc. The similarities of the meaning with the dark lands are ‘others’ land’, ‘bloody land’, ‘empty land’, ‘frozen land’, ‘bloodshot land’, and ‘appealing land’ etc.
Third, in terms of the relation with race, it is considered as ‘the division land’ or ‘the comprador land’ and in the same breath, it is served as the foregrounding motif for the independence consciousness about an anti－foreign country. However, it shows its limits in detail, logical inconsequence, extreme anger about the reality, harsh curses, criticism or struggle and agitation propaganda with non expansive nationalistic attitude caused by unrealitic ideation.
Fourth, the meaning of land that is made from the relation with people is applied to animals and plants. Hence, animals and plants are given shape to the fatal identification with peasants while they are living in ‘the dark land’, as do the people who have to live in difficulty by virtue of being sacrificed by the organizational contradiction.
Fifth, the animal motif results in pig, prog, crucian carp, locust, cattle dung insect, and firefly as well as cattle. However, it is doing duty as the important image to reinforce the confrontation consciousness including complaint, criticism, and conflict by making the harmony with peasants who are living in the ‘gloomy, divided, and comprador land’ thoroughly.
Sixth, the plant image makes the mainstream a sort of weed like wormwood, wild chrysanthemum, shepherd’s purse, dandelion, and so on. However, it is the objective co－relative which is making a companion sense of unity that has the characteristic of wisdom for the overcoming of the reality as the communication partner that responds to peasants with feelings. By making the identical relation with peasants, it becomes the symbol of affection and yearning. Additionally, it appears by and large as the representative image forming the ‘peasantry lyricism’. Land is the eternal hometown and mother of human beings. However, the real meaning is focused on Hong Il－seon’s prospect－peasant poet－sterile and uncomfortable ‘dark land’. That’s mainly because the organizational contradiction didn’t act to create a good network between peasants and land. The aspect of conflict is the trait of Hong Il－seon’s poetry. The trouble was that the realistic peasant poetry showed specifically the will of overcoming reality when it is combined both with the peasant’s actual life and the details of anguish. In addition to, it dulled the edge of the literary sense by expressing the irrational solution approach schematically, when it confronts the unrealistic ideal ideation.
