생태신학적 관점에서 본 토라의 ‘땅’ (The Land of Tora)

초록

1866년 독일의 식물학자 에른스트 헤켈(Ernst Haeckel)에 의해 생태학(Ökologie)이라는 용어가 정의된 이후, 오늘날까지 환경과 관련된 수많은 문제들을 해결하려는 인류의 노력에 대해 “생태-”(eco-)라는 접두어가 사용되어 왔다. 생태라는 용어의 사용과 함께 일어난 중요한 변화를 두 가지로 요약하면 (1) 기존의 “환경”(環境 environment)이라는 용어가 내포하고 있는 인간 중심적 사고방식을 넘어서려는 시도와 (2) 기술적․공학적 차원을 넘어 사상적 지평 위에서 문제의 해법을 찾으려 한 노력이라고 할 수 있다. (이런 변화의 흐름은 한국 천주교회의 생태 운동인 “하늘․땅․물․벗”에서도 이미 그 명칭을 통해 감지된다.)20세기 중반에 들어오면서 가톨릭교회의 신학자들과 실천가들 역시 생태 문제에 대한 신학적 관점, 즉 생태신학에 대한 논의를 지속해 왔으며, 지난 수십 년간 괄목할 만한 연구의 성과들이 나타났다. 단지 그 연구들이 주로 윤리신학적 범주에 머무르면서 성서신학 등과 같은 타 분야와는 그 관심의 공유가 다소 부족하지 않은가라는 반성이 제기되었다. 따라서 이 논문은 생태신학이 좀 더 안정적인 바탕 위에 기초할 수 있도록 성서신학적 관점에서 단단한 신학적 지평을 제공한다는 데에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 특히 구약의 중심이라고 할 수 있는 “토라”에서 생태신학의 중요한 대상인 “땅”의 문제를 고찰함으로써, 하느님과 인간 사이에서 “땅”으로 대표되는 세상(=생태계)은 과연 토라 내에서 어떤 위상을 지니는가라는 질문에 대해 대답하고자 하였다.
이 글은 우선 토라의 계약 개념 안에서의 땅에 대한 신학을 다루고, 이어서 두 창조 이야기와 노아 이야기의 땅에 대해 다루면서, 여기서 얻어진 신학적 성찰을 통해 기존의 생태신학이 종종 경향적으로 제기하는 생태 중심주의(ecocentrism)나 범신론적 회귀의 주장을 극복하고자 하였다. 그리고 그것은 단순히 기존의 인간 중심주의(anthropocentrism)의 고수나 전통적인 신 중심주의(Theocentrism)로의 회귀를 통해서가 아니라 토라가 제시하는 “인간”과 “땅”에 대한 근본적 관계 이해를 바탕으로 하는 텍스트의 재해석을 통해 가능함을 밝히려 하였다.

영어초록

Since the German biologist Ernst Haeckel has defined the term “Ökologie” (=ecology) in 1866, the prefix “eco-” has been used for the efforts of human kind to solve the environmental problems. With the term “eco-” some remarkable changes happened, which are (i) to get over the anthropocentrical way of thinking related to the term “environment” (ii) to try to find solutions not only on the scientific-technical level but also upon the philosophical-ideological horizon.
In the middle of the twentieth century, the theologians and activists of the catholic church began to discuss the theological point of view on the ecological problems, i.e. the eco-theology. As a result there have been so many meaningful outcomes from the ecotheological research in the last few decades. For all that outcomes, the ecotheology itself remained often in the moraltheological category, which caused the lack of collaborations with other fields of theology, e.g. like biblical theology. For this reason this article tries to offer a theological base which will make the ecotheology more stable and sustainable. Especially the purpose of this work is to answer the questions about the theological meaning of the earth in the Tora. As well known, the “earth” is also an important object of the ecotheology and the Tora gives certainly the main perspective of the Old Testament on earth. Therefore “what is the theological topos of the earth between God and men?” would be the main question of this article in which the earth stands as a possible representative of the whole ecosystem.
At first this article deals with the theological concept of the earth at the basis of the covenant theology which builds the main theme of the Tora. Then, analyzing two creation stories and the story of Noah it reflects upon the theological meaning of the earth. At last, based on the analyzed texts, it will criticize a certain tendency of the ecotheology that asserts the idea of ecocentrism or the imminent pantheism. But that means neither to maintain the anthropocentrism, nor to return to the traditional theocentrism. What this article proposes is to open a possibility to get a new theological perspective upon the relationships between men and earth through the adequate understanding and interpretation of the Tora texts.
