초록

디지털콘텐츠의 상호작용적 특성에 따라 웹툰에서 캐릭터의 재현 방식이 더욱 다양해지고 있다. 특히 기존의 남성 중심 영웅 서사에서 벗어난 다양한 여성서사가 등장하면서, 정의로운 여성 주인공뿐만 아니라 이들과 갈등하는 여성 대립자(안타고니스트) 또한 서사에서 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있다. 본 연구는 웹툰에서 재현된 어머니 캐릭터의 안타고니스트성을 분석하고, 디지털콘텐츠에서의 여성서사의 경향성을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 웹툰 <똑 닮은 딸>과 <자매전쟁>을 대상으로 삼고, 모녀간 갈등 구조를 분석하여 안타고니스트로서 어머니 캐릭터가 가지는 특성과 의미를 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 말리노프스키의 부자갈등 개념을 활용해, 기존의 부자 관계에서 나타나는 권력 중심의 갈등이 모녀 관계 속에서 어떻게 재현되는지 살펴보았다.
연구 결과, 두 작품 속 어머니 캐릭터는 딸과의 대립 과정에서 기존의 부자갈등에서 아버지가 수행했던 권위적 역할을 전유하였다. 이는 2015년 이후 영화계를 중심으로 본격화된 젠더 역할 뒤집기 현상이 웹툰에서도 나타난 사례로 볼 수 있다. 또한 부자갈등에서 나타나는 정서적 투자와 기대심리는 모녀 관계에서 동일시로 나타났는데, 어머니는 딸을 자신의 이상적 분신으로 성장시키려는 강한 욕망을 드러냈다. 이 과정에서 임신과 출산이라는 생물학적 경험이 주요한 서사적 장치로 작용하면서 여성서사로서의 특성이 나타났다.
본 연구는 디지털콘텐츠 환경에서 안타고니스트로서의 어머니 캐릭터가 독립적인 인물 유형으로 제시되었음을 규명하였다. 이는 해당 작품이 어머니 캐릭터의 전형적 모성적 특성에서 벗어나, 독자의 요구에 따른 새로운 서사와 흥미를 제공함을 의미한다. 이러한 새로운 캐릭터의 등장은 서브컬처 내 서사의 전형성을 극복하는 시도로 해석될 수 있으며, 창작자에게는 새로운 서사 창작의 가능성을, 수용자에게는 보다 다양한 콘텐츠 향유의 기회를 제공할 수 있음을 시사한다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 콘텐츠에서 여성서사에 대한 학문적 논의를 연결하고, 디지털콘텐츠의 상호작용성을 바탕으로 한 콘텐츠 기획 및 마케팅 전략 수립 가능성을 제안하였다.

영어초록

The interactive nature of digital content has led to increased diversity in the representation of characters in webtoons. In particular, as narratives centered on female protagonists have emerged beyond the traditional male-dominated heroic narratives, female antagonists—those in direct conflict with these protagonists—have also gained significant narrative prominence. This study examines how mother characters in webtoons establish their antagonistic traits and explores trends in female narratives within digital content. To this end, the research focuses on webtoons <Like Mother, Like Daughter> and <Sister Wars>, in which mother characters exhibit antagonistic characteristics, and analyzes the conflict structures between mothers and daughters to explore the representation and significance of these characters. Using Malinowski’s concept of father-son conflict, this study examines how power-driven conflicts traditionally observed in father-son relationships are reinterpreted within mother-daughter dynamics.
As the result, the mother characters in both contents adopt the authoritative role associated with fathers in father-son conflicts. This suggests that the gender role reversal trend, which became prominent in the film industry after 2015, has also been reflected in webtoons.
Additionally, the emotional investment and expectations observed in father-son conflicts are mirrored in mother-daughter relationships through identification. Mothers express a strong desire for their daughters to grow into idealized versions of themselves. This process demonstrates the unique characteristics of female narratives as pregnancy and childbirth function as important narrative devices that shape these conflicts.
This study demonstrates that, within the digital content environment, mother characters represented as antagonists have evolved into independent character types. This shift indicates that these works depart from conventional portrayals of maternal figures, instead offering new narrative structures and engagement based on audience expectations. The emergence of such characters can be interpreted as an attempt to overcome the stereotypical narrative frameworks prevalent in subcultures, thereby providing creators with new storytelling possibilities and audiences with access to a wider range of content.
Ultimately, this study bridges academic discussions on female narratives in digital content and suggests possibilities for content planning and marketing strategies that leverage the interactivity of digital platforms.
