초록

본고는 ‘삼정승 딸을 얻은 단명소년’형 설화를 혼인 이후의 서사 전개 과정을 기준으로 유형별로 분류하고, 각각의 유형에서 공통 단락을 추출하여 설화를 분석하였다. 그리고 설화에 내재되어 있는 설화전승집단의 전승 의식을 살펴보았다.
‘삼정승 딸을 얻은 단명소년’형 설화는 주인공이 관상이나 점괘를 통해 단명하게 될 운명임을 알게 되고 그에 따른 방책으로 제시된 삼정승 딸을 만나 결연함으로써 수명을 연장하고 행복한 삶을 영위했다고 하는 이야기이다. 혼인을 통한 운명의 변역이 이루어진다.
본고는 주인공이 수명을 연장하고 삼정승 딸과 혼인하는 이야기를 제1유형, 수명연장 이후에 장원급제하고 정승 딸과 혼인하는 이야기를 제2유형, 장원급제 이후 살인누명을 쓰거나 새로운 사건이 등장하고 이를 정승 딸이 해결하는 이야기를 파생형으로 분류하였다. 파생형은 소설의 설화화 과정을 거친 이야기이다. 1920년대부터 오늘날까지 세 가지 유형의 이야기가 전국적으로 구전․채록되고 있다.
주인공은 손이 귀한 집안의 만득자나 삼대독자 혹은 구대독자로 설정된다. 주인공이 손이 귀한 자식이라는 것은 수명연장의 당위성을 부각시키기 위한 의도로 보인다. 주인공이 단명할 운명임을 알아보는 인물은 크게 노승과 점쟁이이다. 노승은 관상을, 점쟁이는 점괘를 통해 주인공이 단명할 팔자임을 알게 된다. 이들은 주인공의 단명을 예언할 뿐만 아니라 삼정승 딸과 동침해야 살 수 있다는 연명 방도도 제시한다. 수명연장 자체가 난제 중의 난제임을 뜻한다.
주인공이 삼정승 딸을 만나 결연하는 과정에서 ‘팥죽장사와 그녀의 딸’이 조력자로 등장한다. 설화의 각 편에 따라 ‘팥죽장사와 그녀의 딸’이 주인공을 도와주는 것은 ‘연민의 정’ 혹은 ‘혈연의 정’ 때문이다. 삼정승 딸의 처소는 초당(별당)으로, 이곳은 여성들만의 거주 공간이다. 따라서 남성인 주인공이 ‘범접하기 어려운 장소’로, 주인공이 직면한 난관을 상징적으로 보여주는 공간이라 하겠다. 주인공의 난제는 조력자의 기지로 해결된다.
주인공은 정승 딸과 동침함으로써 수명을 연장하고, 과거에 급제하며 정승의 사위가 된다. 주인공이 누리는 ‘수․복․귀’ 모두 정승 딸의 자기희생과 능력에서 비롯된 것이다. 그럼에도 정승 딸의 능력은 크게 부각되지 않고, 주인공을 보좌하는 보조자의 역할만이 강조된다. 남성을 위해 희생을 강요당했던 전통적인 여성상이 설화에 고스란히 드러나 있다.

영어초록

This study classified folk tales of a short-lived boy who got married to three ministers' daughters according to the narrational development process of the story after they get married. Common paragraphs were extracted from each category and then analyzed. This study also examined the tradition group's ritual of transmission imbedded in the folk tales.
This story is a kind of tales prolonging one's life eventually, in which the protagonist comes to know of his fate to live short via physiognomy or a divination sign and ties the knot with the daughter of prime minister as a measure suggested therewith, resulting in his long and happy life. The destiny alters through marriage.
This study categorized the structure of this story telling with three types. In the first type, the story ends when the protagonist prolongs his life and marries the daughter of prime minister. In the second, following the prolongation of his life, he passes the state examination and marries the daughter of prime minister. And thirdly in the derivative, following his pass of the state examination, he is wrongly charged with murder or a new incident occurs and the daughter of prime minister sorts out the problem. The derivative is a story that has turned into a folk tale in the form of the novel. Stories with three types as such have been passing down orally and by books to date from the 1920s.
The protagonist is assumed to be borne at his parent's later years or only son of three or nine generations. The setting of the protagonist being a rare offspring seems to be an attempt to highlight the rationale for prolonging the life. The figure who is firstly aware of short life of the protagonist is normally an old Buddhist monk or a fortune-teller. The former comes to know the fate by physiognomy and the latter by a divination sign. They not only foretell short life but also suggest that to prolong the life, the protagonist should sleep with the daughter of prime minister. This means that life extension is the greatest dilemma.
While the protagonist meets and ties the knot with the daughter of prime minister, ‘Patjuk peddler and her daughter’ appear as the helper. Setting of ‘Patjuk peddler and her daughter’ helping the protagonist depending on the version of the folk tales comes from ‘compassion’ or ‘affection from blood ties’. Detached cottage where the daughter of prime minister lives is ‘a place where ordinary people can't approach easily’ and symbolically shows the hardship the protagonist faces. At the end of the day, the protagonist can resolve his thorny problem by dint of the helper's wits.
By sleeping with the daughter of prime minister, the protagonist was able to prolong his life, pass the state examination and become the son-in-law of the prime minister. ‘Life, blessing and good fortune’ the protagonist enjoys all come from the self-sacrifice and ability of the daughter of prime minister. Yet, her ability is not highlighted and shines only as an assistant. This, in the form of a folk tale, intactly reveals the nature of traditional femininity in which females were forced to sacrifice themselves for males.
