애니메이션 ‘아버지와 딸’에서의 화면구도을 통한 스토리텔링에 관한 연구 (A Study on Storytelling observed on Screen Composition of Animation 'Father & Daughter')

초록

21세기에는 스토리텔링이 문화산업의 근본이자 지향점이 되고 있다. 특히 영화나 애니메이션 같은 영상에서 스토리텔링은 가장 핵심적인 역할을 담당하고 있는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 기본적으로 스토리텔링은 창작 작업이며 소재를 발굴하고 그 소재로 이야기를 만들어내는 창의적 과정이다. 그러나 우리나라의 애니메이션 제작 상황은 스토리의 중요성과 가치가 인식되었음에도 불구하고 오랜 세월동안 OEM 제작에 익숙해져있어 좋은 스토리를 만들어내는데 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 스토리텔링은 ‘이야기를 전달하는 행위’라고 간단하게 정의할 수 있다. 영상으로 이야기를 전달하는 데 있어 대사나 내레이션과 함께 색상, 미장센, 카메라 등 다양한 요소들이 작용하게 된다. 스토리텔링이 중요한 요소가 되고 있는 애니메이션은 구체적인 생각과 감정을 표현하는 스타일 등을 다양하게 만들에 낼 수 있는 매개체로서 이야기를 전달하는 데 있어 등장인물들의 구체적이 표정과 대사나 내레이션 등의 직접적인 방법보다는 실사에서 표현할 수 없는 독특한 표현방법이 사용된다. 특히 상징, 메타모포시스 등 직접적인 전달보다는 은유적인 표현기법들을 사용함으로서 관객들에게 시각적 수준을 향상시켜준다.
본 논문은 화면의 구도가 스토리텔링의 역할로서 이야기의 전체적인 분위기와 등장인물들의 감정전달을 할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 고찰하고 한다. 특히, 영국의 영상 시인이며 애니메이터인 마이클 두둑 드 비트(Micahel Dudok de Wit)의 ‘아버지와 딸’을 중심으로 그가 사용한 애니메이션 화면구도를 분석하고 향후 이러한 소재의 애니메이션 화면구도 표현 방법들의 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

영어초록

In the 21st century, storytelling has become the key element that determines the direction of the cultural industry. In particular, it is well known that storytelling plays a major role in motion pictures, including movies and animations. Fundamentally, storytelling is the creative work and process of searching for a subject and making stories based on the subject. Although the importance and the value of stories are well-perceived, Korean animators have long been accustomed to OEM production, and thus have trouble making good stories. Storytelling can be simply defined as ‘the act of delivering stories.’ When delivering stories through images, various factors including color tones, mise-en-scene, and camera angle, as well as lines, and narration, come into play. To deliver stories as a medium that can create different styles of expressing a concrete idea and emotion, animation, one of whose crucial factors is storytelling, uses unique methods that cannot be applied in the real world rather than direct methods such as facial expression, lines and narration. Notably, rather than delivering ideas in a straightforward way, it employs metaphoric expression methods such as symbols and metamorphosis to elevate the level of visual expression. This article aims to study the possibility that composition delivers an overall atmosphere and the feelings of characters. In particular, the focus will be on the poem Father and Daughter by the British film poet and animator, Michael, its composition will be analyzed and the future direction of composition will be proposed for animation with similar subject matter.
This thesis includes the analysis of the screen producing technique of Micahel Dudok de Wit in his animation father and daughter. Based on the analysis, screen composition is not limited to control the arrangement of characters and their sceneries, it also can be applied in the storytelling. As a result, the screen composition is the main method in delivering the emotions of the characters and the moods of the scenes in father and daughter, and it is proven that the screen composition can be more efficient than the direct method such as speech or narration.
