초록

This paper analyzes The Daughters of Kim's Pharmacy by Park Kyong-ni and the adapted film made by Yu Hyun-mok. They portrayed the tragic fall of family during the transition from a pre-modern to modern society. This paper raise a question with the preceding studies that constitute The Daughters of Kim's Pharmacy as assimilation magical and fatalistic value. This paper takes a view of the meanings romantic love implicates that constitutes ideologic topography of the novel by analyzing the method of survival of characters. The romantic love which implicates a rebellious spirit resists patriarchy. In The Daughters of Kim's Pharmacy, the tragedy of the family is culminated with the fall of the daughters, who failed in marriage under a patriarchal marriage system. Also the level of gender engages with the level of class, implies complicates political unconscious. All of these are found on Park Kyong-ni's epic novel, The Earth, a monumental achievement in Korean literary history. The matrilineal narrative by Park Kyong-ni is based on the irony of romance and revolution and it pursues dialectics between civilization and nature and embraces various others. Whereas an adapted film by Yu Hyun-mok changed the ending of the original work, reduced the meaning of the tragedy. Such an ending reflects to an extent the characteristics of family melodramas of the 1960s, in which patriarchal authority was reconfirmed in the developmental dictatorship. The spirit of resistance that characters had aspired to was diluted by the ideology of patriarchy and the logic of developmental dictatorship. As a result, the film eliminates revolutionary romantic ideas and sutures cracks of patriarchal system. Not only the irony of romance and revolution but also the meaning's network of a tragedy by the novel, The Daughters of Kim's Pharmacy are revealed through comparing to the adapted film.
