박경리의 『김약국의 딸들』에 나타난 장소 연구 (A study on the Places in 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』 of PARK Kyongri)

초록

본 연구는 박경리의 『김약국의 딸들』에 나타난 장소 분석을 통해 작가의 실제 장소 경험이 소설적 상상력으로 재구성되는 과정을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 『김약국의 딸들』에 나타난 장소를 에드워드 랠프의 ‘장소의 정체성’이라는 개념으로 살펴보았다. 장소의 정체성을 살피기 위해 먼저 소설의 주요 배경이 되는 ‘통영’과 인물들의 활동의 근원이 되는 ‘집’으로 나누어 각 장소의 의미를 분석해 보았다.
이 작품에서 ‘통영’은 향수병을 불러일으키거나 즐거운 경험이 남아있는 ‘고향’이 아니다. 상업의 발달로 인해 배금주의가 만연하여 도덕적으로 타락한 장소이자, 주술적 예언과 기독교 신앙이 공존하는 운명에 사로잡힌 장소이다. 또한 여성으로서는 치명적인 성추문이 끊이질 않는 억압적이고 감옥 같은 장소다.
이 장소에서 인물들은 “비상먹은 자손은 지리지 않는다”는 주술적 예언의 장소인 집의 내부와 외부에 머물면서 운명을 동일시하기도 하고, 외면하기도 하고, 객관적 시각으로 바라보기도 한다. 이들에게 집은 근원적인 장소이자 존재의 근원이지만 즐거운 경험으로 애착을 경험하기보다는 벗어날 수 없는 저주와 운명의 장소라는 의미를 지니기 때문에 이들은 죽거나 집을 떠나는 선택을 한다. 이것은 ‘용빈’이 아버지의 죽음 이후 집안을 정리하고 ‘용혜’와 같이 윤선을 타고 떠나는 마지막 장의 소제목이 ‘출발’인 것으로 알 수 있다. 그것은 바로 장소가 주는 끔찍한 고역에서 벗어나 익명의 장소에서 ‘운명의 주체’로의 새로운 출발을 의미하는 것이다.
『김약국의 딸들』에 나타난 통영이나 집이라는 장소의 정체성은 ‘고향이라는 고역’이다. 흔히 고향은 노스텔지어나 토포필리아와 같은 용어로 설명되곤 한다. 이것은 고향이나 집을 ‘진정한 장소감’을 주는 장소로 인식한 결과이다. 그러나 이 작품에서 통영과 집은 ‘진정한 장소감’이 상실된 곳으로 토포필리아와 토포포비아의 성격을 동시에 지니고 있다.
실제 박경리에게 통영은 고향이기도 하지만 아버지와 남편과 아들을 상실을 경험한 고역의 장소이기도 하다. 이러한 작가의 장소 경험은『김약국의 딸들』에서 통영에 대한 장소 의미로 고스란히 나타나 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to understand actual place experience of an author. In order to achieve the goal, the study needed to look at other previous researches, especially, on books written by PARK Kyongri, and it went further than those previous researches did, which saw 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』 only as a book for PARK to get to her masterpiece, 『TOJI』. In order to make greater progress than those researches did which had only conducted an analysis on characters in 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』, the study did another analysis on places found in the book, and that way, the study eventually figured out how the author’s actual experiences with places could influence one’s attempt to restructure the places with novelistic imagination.
The study looked into meanings of ‘Tongyeong’, a place talked about in 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』, in relation to a concept called ‘identity of place’, first mentioned by Edward Ralph. In order to go deep with this identity of place, the study categorized each place into ‘Tongyeong’, a main place in the novel, and ‘House’, a place where everyone in the book seems to be connected to, and then, analyzed the meanings of those places.
If you look at ‘Tongyeong’ in this book, you will understand that it is not your little ‘hometown’ which gets you in homesickness or reminds you of one of the best days in your life. It is rather an ethically-corrupt place full of mammonism caused by the industrial development but also a place in which shamanistic prophecies and Christian belief co-exist. In addition, to women, it is considered as a repressive prison which never let go of these women from deadly sex scandals.
In this place, the characters stay inside and outside the house of this shamanistic prophecy, "Offspring who have eaten arsenic trioxide do not thick themselves.", and identify themselves with the fate while trying to run away from it. At the same time, they even look at the prophecy from objective aspects. As far as these characters concern, the house is both their root and a reason for them to keep existing but still, it is a place of a curse and a fate which they would never get rid of. Again, to these people, the house is not something that gives them pleasant experiences or that makes them feel attached or anything. That being the case, the characters make one of these decisions which is to die in the house or to leave the place. That is clearly understood when 'Yongbin' cleans house and leaves the place with 'Yonghye' in a steamship after his father's death. That is actually the last chapter of the book and yet, the title of it is 'A Start'. That signifies how the characters finally get out of this torturing backbreaker but head for a new start as 'main agents of the fate' in some anonymous place.
The identity of either Tongyeong or House appeared in 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』is the 'backbreaker under the name of a hometown'. In general, the hometown is explained with words such as nostalgia and topophilia. That is a result of how you recognize your hometown or house as a place of 'authenticity sense of place'. However, at least in this novel, Tongyeong and House have lost this 'authenticity sense of place' and yet, they still seem to be related to topohilia and topophobia.
In fact, as for PARK Kyongri, Tongyeong is her hometown but is a sad place at the same time because she lost her father, husband and son there. Such place experience of the author is described as it is in relation to what this place in 『Daughters of Kim Yark-kook』, Tongyeong, actually tries to signify.
