양문록계 소설에 나타난 딸의 양상과 의미 (A Study of the Daughter's Appearance and Meaning in Yangmunrok novels)

초록

이 연구는 양문록계 소설에 나타난 딸의 양상을 통해 양문록계 소설의 특징을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 양문록계 소설은 국문장편소설 및 여성영웅소설과 교섭 관계를 맺으며 당대의 소설 장르가 혼효되어 있는 양상을 보인다. 기존의 연구에서 ‘여성’을 연구하거나 ‘아내’를 연구하는 경우가 많았으나 딸을 중심으로 살펴본 연구는 흔치 않았다. 양문록계 소설은 여성의 삶의 구조와 유사한 서사구조를 갖는바, 이 글에서는 양문록계 소설의 구조적 특징을 바탕으로 ‘딸’에 주목하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 온전히 국문장편소설의 자장에서 이해되는 <곽장양문록>과 <유이양문록>의 경우 삼대록계 소설에서는 딸이 고난을 겪을 때 친정이 적극적으로 개입하여 딸의 문제를 해결하지 않는 반면, 양문록계 소설에서는 친정이 적극적으로 개입하는 양상이 나타남을 확인하였다.
둘째, 여성영웅소설의 자장에서 이해되는 <부장양문록>, <하진양문록>, <이조양문록>의 경우 여성영웅소설의 주인공과 유사하면서도 ‘친정 가문’에 대한 의식을 얼마나 하고 있는지에 대한 정도의 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다.
이를 통해, 양문록계 소설은 국문장편소설에 비해 시댁 가문보다는 친정 가문에 대한 딸의 감정을 더 많이 드러내며, 여성영웅소설에 비해 친정을 의식하는 딸의 모습이 더 많이 나타나는 경향이 있음을 알 수 있었다.
조선 후기는 가부장제의 제도적 안정을 꾀하기 위해 출가외인 담론을 바탕으로 며느리 만들기에 주력하던 시기였다. 양문록계 소설은 다른 유형의 소설에 비해 상대적으로 며느리 만들기보다 딸의 정체성을 유지하는 것을 강조한다. 나아가 개인의 정체성을 강조하는 작품도 등장하면서 당대 여성 향유층의 소망을 구현하는 서사를 한층 섬세하게 드러내고 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to Daughter's Appearance and Meaning in Yangmunrok novels through an analysis of the portrayal of daughters in these novels. Yangmunrok novels exhibit a distinctive narrative structure, intertwined with Korean full-length novels and female heroic novels of the time. Given the narrative structure similarities between Yangmunrok novels and the structure of women's lives, this paper directs attention to the theme of 'daughters' based on the characteristics of Yangmunrok novels.
As a result, firstly, in the context of the family register novels such as <Gwak JangYangmunrok> and <Yu-IYangmunrok>, it was observed that when daughters face adversity, the family does not actively intervene to resolve the daughter's issues in the three-generation register novels. In contrast, Yangmunrok novels exhibit a pattern where the family actively intervenes in addressing the daughter's problems.
Secondly, in the context of female hero novels such as <BuJangYangmunrok>, <HaJinYangmunrok>, and <I-joYangmunrok>, differences were noted in the degree of consciousness regarding the 'ancestral family.' While all novels share similarities with female hero novels' protagonists, there are variations in the degree of emphasis on the awareness and determination toward the ancestral family. Specifically, <HaJinYangmunrok> expresses a strong determination and consciousness toward the ancestral family, whereas <BuJangYangmunrok> and <I-joYangmunrok> reveal a consciousness of the ancestral family but tend to highlight individual fulfillment.
Through this analysis, it was observed that Yangmunrok novels, compared to Korean short fiction, more prominently depict the emotions of the paternal family rather than the in-law family, and they portray the emotions of daughters more extensively than female hero novels. In the late Joseon period, there was a focus on constructing daughter-in-law figures based on discourse to achieve stability in the patriarchal system. Novels depict instances where conflicts arise between the creation of daughter-in-law figures and the desire to live as daughters. Yangmunrok novels, in particular, emphasize the identity of daughters compared to other types of novels. Furthermore, as works highlighting individual identity emerged, these novels delicately expressed narratives that realized the aspirations of contemporary women in the upper class.
