    초록

    The Syro-Ephraimite war is one of representative international wars between Assyrian empire and small allied countries in the Levant in 734-732 BC. It was thought that Assyrian war was a holy war for Assur,the national god, to enlarge his dominion. Tiglath-pileser III made almost a yearly conquest during his reign. The Syro-Ephraimite war was to resist Tiglath-pileser’s westward movement into the Levant in which Northern Israel, Aram-Syria and other countries allied against Assyrian movement.
    The allied countries invaded into Southern Judah which rejected to join their request to side with them. They tried to establish a puppet regime,Tabeal in Judah.
    Prophet Isaiah declared the allied scheme would not succeed, and gave oracle not to fear, but to depend on Yahweh only. However, Ahaz asked military help to Tiglath-pileser, who came to destroy Damascus in 734-732 BC and annexed it into Assyrian province. He captured large parts of Northern Israel as it tried independence and annexed them as Assyrian provinces, and Pekah, the king, was put to death. Small states in the Levant were dependent upon Egyptian support to form alliance against Assyria for their independence, for which Assyria made a cruel retaliation.
    One of important results with Syro-Ephraimite war the destruction of Samaria after three years’ siege as Northern Israel rejected tribute to Assyria upon reliance on Egypt, against which Shalmaneser V invaded Samaria. The city resisted for three years, then finally fell and the population was put into deportation.
    The Syro-Ephraimite war also contributed to the import of pagan idolatry to Southern Judah, which paved notable regression of Judah’s religion. In latter days, both Deuteronomistic historian and Chronicler interpreted the destruction of both Northern Israel and Southern Judah as the result of apostasy and pagan idolatry, neglecting the wrong decisions of leaders of both nations on foreign and military relations with Assyrian empire. They show limit of theological interpretation and perspective, focusing on the identity and purity of Israilite religion only.
    Merodach-Baladan, a Chaldean prince, made use of turmoil of the siege of Samaria by Assyrians for three years, and the death of Shalmanezer V, and enthronement of Sargon. He proclaimed himself king of Babylon, and waged an independence movement against Assyria.
    The Syro-Ephraimite war was initiated by the hegemony policy of Tiglath-pileser III, and it results made deep impacts in the Levant and the Ancient Near East.
