초록

This paper examined, from the point of view of cultural semiotics, how the space of Hanseong, Gyeongseong, and Seoul has been understood according to the historical changes in the designation for the administrative region from Hanseong to Gyeongseong, and then from Gyeongseong to Seoul. It was determined that this understanding has a significant influence on defining the “Seoulites” of today. Hanseong, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, was the political center of the nation, but Gyeongseong during the Japanese colonial period was transformed into a political and economic center for colonial rule. In the process, the city wall that served to divide the understanding of space into absolute categories of “inside the city walls” and “outside the city walls” was torn down. Gyeongseong was also divided into commercial areas, industrial areas, and residential areas under the pretext of urban development, and Koreans were gradually forced out into the poor areas on the outskirts of Gyeongseong. Thus the center of Gyeongseong was established as a space where colonial capital and new culture (modern culture introduced through Japan) were concentrated, while the outskirts were established as a residential space for Koreans who lacked these things. Yet as Gyeonseong was given the new administrative regional designation of Seoul after liberation and the Seoul region expanded in accordance with the development of the southeastern part of the city, there was another important change in the spatial understanding of the city. That is, the terms “north of the river”(Gangbuk) and “south of the river”(Gangnam) created a new understanding of “Seoul” and “Seoulites,” and this understanding gradually became a fixed idea. In particular, Gangnam was perceived as playing the role of economic center, educational center, and new cultural(Western cultural) center when compared with Gangbuk, and an understanding of this very space of Gangnam as one that represented Seoul grew. This is not a new understanding, but one that should be considered an extension of the spatial understanding that had been drawn out in colonial Gyeongseong, as well as an extension of an understanding of the residents of colonial Gyeongseong, which firmly established and fixed the ideas of “Gangnam residents” versus “Gangbuk residents” and “Seoulites” versus “country people.”
