초록

The objective of this paper is to compare the ‘adjectival verb’(＝형용동사)
in Japanese and the ‘adjectival root’(＝어근 / 관형명사) in Korean and to make a conclusion
that they have to be classified in the same category on the basis of the common
syntactico-semantic features. This study is motivated from observing that it is generally
accepted that Korean has one type of adjective class unlike Japanese which has two
types of adjective class, inflected adjectives (＝verb-like adjectives) and uninflected
adjectives (＝noun-like adjectives) (Backhouse (2004)). Keeping in mind the fact that
it is necessary to describe a given language in terms of consistent reference points in
order to make language typology more perfect, I try to describe the adjective-related
phenomena in Japanese and Korean. Also I suggest a new possibility of reorganizing
the adjectives in Korean so that we can find new noun-like adjectives besides verb-like
adjectives. Consequently, the lexemes traditionally called ‘adnouns / bound roots, etc.’
in Korean can be recognized or reorganized as simple ‘(nominal) adjectives’, and I can
consider the so-called ‘adjectival verbs’ in Japanese as ‘nominal adjectives’. (University

영어초록
