사토 하루오「아름다운 마을」의 정치적 미의식 (The Political Aesthetics of Sato Haruo’s “Beautiful Town”)

초록

佐藤春夫はオスカーワイルドの翻訳文を批評した文章を通して文壇にデビューした。この文章で佐藤はワイルドの主題は「高踏的な思想感情」にあり、翻訳文はそれを可能な限り生かすべきであると主張する。とくに佐藤は権力を持っているのは平凡な多数者であるが、自分は特別な少数者に賛同していることを明らかにした。こうして佐藤はワイルドの芸術至上主義から多数者と少数者の葛藤関係を読み取り、それに基づいて自分の文学世界を展開するようになる。 以上のような佐藤の芸術観は彼のユートピア小説「美しき町」を通して実現される。「美しき町」は芸術家たちが理想の町を建設するために奮闘する姿が描かれているが、その中で「多くの人々」が＜美しい町＞に遭遇して驚く場面が出てくる。この場面を通して主人公たちが計画する＜美しい町＞の目的は「多くの人々」が住んでいる日常生活を異化するためであることが確認される。このような内容のために「美しき町」はユートピア小説として読められる。 しかし、作品のなかで描かれる＜美しい町＞は非常に閉鎖的な構造をもっており、「多くの人々」の接近を禁じている。そのうえ、＜美しい町＞の内部は隠蔽され、町の美しさのみが際立つ。こうした＜美しい町＞の排他性のために「多くの人々」は十分に異化できない。ここに佐藤春夫の政治性があらわれる。佐藤は美しい芸術を通して多数の一般大衆を啓蒙しようとする考えは持っているが、その一般大衆によって自分の芸術が相対化されることを忌み嫌っている。そのために佐藤の文学はエリート主義を見せると同時に自閉的な限界も露呈しているのである。

영어초록

Criticizing translation of Oscar Wilde’s work, Sato Haruo made his debut as an artist. In his critical review, Sato asserted that the leitmotif of Wilde is the “highbrow thought and feeling,” but the translation failed to deliver this thought and feeling to the reader. Especially, Sato made clear that he agreed with the highbrow minority although the ordinary majority had the actual power. In this way, Sato interpreted Wilde’s aesthetics as the conflict of the majority and the minority. Influenced by Wilde’s thought, Sato developed his unique literary theme.
Sato’s aesthetics is best realized in his utopian novel, “Beautiful Town.” Narrating the process of building an ideal town, “Beautiful Town” has a scene that ‘many people’ encountered the ‘beautiful town’ and were extremely wondered. The scene tells that the purpose of building the ‘beautiful town’ was to dissimilate the routine life of ‘many people.’ We can assume from this fact that the “Beautiful Town” is a typical utopian novel.
However, the ‘beautiful town’ had an exceedingly closed structure that prohibited many people’s access. Besides, the inner part of the ‘beautiful town’ was hidden, and only the beauty of the town was emphasized. Because of this exclusiveness of the ‘beautiful town’, many people’s life could not be thoroughly dissimilated. In this part, “Beautiful Town” reveals Sato’s political thoughts. Sato tried to enlighten the vast majority through beautiful art, but he loathed the idea that his art could be relativized by the mass. Because of this thought, Sato’s literature reveals not only elitism but also its autistic structure.
