숙종대 왕실여성들의 정치적 행보와 역할 (On the political activities and rolesof the royal women during the reignof King Sukjong in later Choseon Dynasty)

초록

이 연구는 조선 숙종 때의 왕실여성인 인현왕후 민씨, 영빈 김씨, 희빈 장씨, 숙빈 최씨 등이 정국 변동에서 보여준 정치적 행보와 역할을 살펴본 연구이다. 그녀들의 생애 가운데에 세 차례의 정국 변동과 巫蠱의 옥사가 일어났다. 이 사건들을 중심으로 그 여성들의 정치적 활동을 고찰해 보았다.
서인 출신 왕비 인현왕후와 간택후궁 영빈은 대표적인 명문가 집안의 여성이었다. 그녀들은 인조반정 직후에 내세운 서인들의 ‘왕실 혼인을 잃지 않는다’는 목표 하에 선발되었고, ‘정국 변동’ 시기에 서인 당파에 협조하여 궁궐 안의 동향이나 국왕 숙종의 동정을 서인 세력에 제공해 주었다. 또한 남인 세력을 누르기 위한 서인들의 계획에 적극적으로 동참했다. 두 여성이 정국 변동에서 보여준 정탐 행보는 자신들의 신변을 보호하고 가문의 위세를 유지하기 위한 것이었다. 이것은 각기 친정인 여흥 민씨 가문과 안동 김씨 가문을 위한 일이었다. 그래서 두 여성의 정치적 행보는 소극적이고도 수동적인 모습으로 나타났다.
궁관 출신인 희빈과 숙빈의 집안은 미천하였다. 희빈 장씨는 역관 출신 집안의 중인층 여성으로, 남인 당파와 연결되었고, 숙빈 최씨는 서인 당파와 연결되었다. 보통 ‘기사환국’이라 불리는 정국 변동 사건에서 희빈은 국왕 숙종의 조력자로서, 비대해진 서인 세력을 제거하고 자기 당파인 남인이 정권을 잡도록 협조했다. 반면 ‘갑술환국’이라는 정국 변동 사건과 ‘무고의 옥사’에서 숙빈은 궁궐에서 추방되었던 인현왕후와 영빈을 복위시키고, 희빈과 남인 당파 세력을 축출하였으며 서인 당파의 정권을 회복시켰다. 희빈은 서인 당파의 정권을 한동안 와해시켰고, 숙빈은 남인 당파 정권을 붕괴시켰을 뿐만 아니라, 그 정치적 기반을 해체시켰다.
희빈 장씨와 숙빈 최씨의 정치적 행보는 미천한 가문의 융성보다는 자신들의 꿈을 이루기 위해 움직였는데, 그녀 자신의 신분 향상과 아들의 지위를 확보하기 위한 것이었다. 그녀들의 노력은 성공적이었다. 희빈 장씨는 남인 당파의 힘을 빌려 인현왕후를 왕비 자리에서 축출하고 그 자신이 왕비 자리에 앉았다. 숙빈 최씨는 서인 당파의 힘을 빌려 인현왕후를 복위시키고 희빈 장씨를 왕비 자리에서 축출하였다가 죽음으로 내몰았다. 이와 같이 희빈 장씨와 숙빈 최씨의 정치적 행보는 적극적이고 강인한 모습이었다.

영어초록

This is a study of the political behaviors and roles of Queen Inhyeon(仁顯王后, 1667~1701), the royal concubine lady Yeongbin Kim(寧嬪金氏, 1669~ 1735), the royal concubine lady Heebin Jang(禧嬪張氏, 1659~1701), and the royal concubine lady Sookbin Choi(淑嬪崔氏, 1670~1718), the royal consorts of King Sukjong(肅宗, 1674.8~1720.6) in the later Choseon Dynasty. There occurred three main political upheavals and an innocent death affair in their lives. The political activities of these women were considered.
Queen Inhyeon and lady Yeungbin, came from distinguished families of Seoin(西人) party. They were selected with the goal of not losing the royal marriage of the Seoin party, who came up shortly after the Injo revolution(仁祖反正) in 1623. They cooperated with the Seoin party during the political upheavals against Namin(南人) party to provide the informations in the palace or the sympathy of King Sukjong. In addition, they actively participated in the plans of the Seoin party to suppress the other side. The two women’s scheme movements in the political situation were aimed at protecting their identity and preserving the family’s position. These were done for their families, the Yeuheung Min’s(驪興閔氏) and the Andong Kim’s(安東金氏). Thus, the political behavior of the two women appeared rather indifferent and passive.
Lady Heebin and lady Sookbin, originally were lower court ladies, had the poor family backgrounds. Heebin Jang came from a family of low officials worked as a Chinese interpreter and connected with Namin party. Lady Sookbin Choi also came from a low warrior family, but connected with the major party of Seoin.
Heebin, as an assistant of King Sukjong helped the king to promote a big political upheaval in 1689, in which the king expelled Queen Inhyeon and lady Youngbin from the palace and to bring herself as a new queen and her son as a crown prince. In the upheaval the Seoin party was removed from the government, and Namin party took the power. After five years another political upheaval was occurred, in which lady Sukbin operated to reinstate the Queen Inhyeon and Yeongbin to their original position, and expelled lady Heebin from the position of the queen. In the upheaval the Namin party lost the government and the opposite Seoin party restored the power again. Lady Heebin disintegrated the Seoin party regime only for a while, but Sookbin could collapsed the Namin party to dismantle their political base eternally.
The two political upheavals caused by lady Heebin and lady Sookbin moved to fulfill their dreams rather than the prosperity of their humble families, to improve their own status and secure their sons to be kings in the future. Their efforts were successful anyway. Heebin, with the power of Namin party, could expel Queen Inhyeon and sat herself in the queen’s seat. And Sookbin with the power of the Seoin party also could reinstate Queen Inhyeon and expelled Heebin and drove her to the innocent death. As such, the political actions of lady Heebin Jang and lady Sookbin Choi were both active and unyielding.
