여고생들의 공부와 시험에 관한 속신 연구 (Research on Vulgar Superstitions Regarding Studies and Exams of High School Girls)

초록

대학입시와 같이 중요한 시험을 앞둔 학생들은 엿이나, 찹쌀떡 등이 좋은 결과를 가져올 것이라 믿고 기대한다. 이처럼 어떠한 행위나 상황을 조건으로 공부, 성적, 시험, 수능시험, 대학입학, 적성, 지능, 진로에 관한 결과를 이야기 하는 속신을 공부와 시험에 관한 속신이라고 분류 한다. 여고생들의 이러한 속신을 알아보기 위해 서울 서대문구 북아현동에 위치한 서울 중앙여자고등학교의 학생들을 대상으로 세 단계에 걸친 현장조사를 실시하였다. 제일 먼저 하굣길의 학생들을 무작위로 선정하여 면접조사를 실시하였고, 그 다음 전교생들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 앞선 응답자들 가운데 학년·종교 등을 고려하여 선정된 대상들을 통해 심층면접조사를 실시하였다. 설문조사에서는 전채 7,547건의 속신이 조사되었으며, 이 가운데 공부·시험에 관한 속신은 828건이다.
공부와 시험에 관한 속신은 음식과 씻기, 신체, 장소와 방향, 생활용품, 학용품등을 조건으로 공부나 시험에 관한 결과를 이야기 하고 있다. 속신의 결과양상을 보면 긍정적 결과 형태가 부정적 결과의 형태보다 훨씬 다양한 형태의 결과들로 나타나고 있다. 그러나 속신의 전체적인 수량을 비교 하면 그 차이는 줄어든다. 이는 부정형의 속신이 결과 형태는 단조로우나 대부분 인지도가 높은 속신이기 때문이다. 즉 부정형의 속신이 비교적 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 전승된 것들이며 높은 인지도만큼 일상 속에 깊이 자리를 잡아 가는 것임을 증명 한다. 반면 긍정적 결과의 속신에서는 계속적인 수단의 변형으로 다양하게 변화되고 새롭게 만들어지는 속신이 주를 이루고 있어 그 결과 형태는 다양하지만 인지도에서는 낮은 비율을 보인다.
여고생들은 공부와 시험에 관한 속신을 또래집단과 가정, 그리고 대중매체를 통하여 전달 받는다. 공부와 시험에 관한 속신이 또래집단 안에서 전승될 때 집단 전체의 목표를 확인하고 그 목표를 실현하는 과정에서 생기는 공포를 분출한다. 또한 목표의 실현을 위한 공동의 규범을 제시하는 데에도 속신이 작용한다. 한편 가정 내 전승되는 속신의 경우 ‘엄마’가 속신의 전달자로서 가장 큰 역할을 하며 다른 과정을 통한 전승과 비교 할 때 가장 높은 신뢰도를 보이는 것이 특징이다. 끝으로 대중매체에서 속신은 여고생의 실생활에 영향을 미치지 못하는 ‘단지 알고 있는 속신’일 경우가 많으며 이때 속신은 대중매체의 소재와 ‘수능상품’이라는 소비의 대상으로 나타난다. 또한 인터넷에서 속신을 접하게 될 때는 최소한의 문화를 공유하는 ‘가상공동체’와 같은 집단, 그리고 정보 제공자의 신분을 최대한 확인할 수 있는 속신에 더욱 신뢰를 갖게 되며 수용가능성 또한 높아지는 것을 알 수 있다.
공부와 시험에 관한 속신은 욕구의 표현과, 믿음, 또래집단의 결속력강화 그리고 오락과 유희의 기능을 갖는다. 제일먼저 공부와 시험에 긍정적 결과를 얻고 싶은 욕구, 즉 공부와 시험을 통해 자아실현을 이루고자 하는 여고생들의 욕구를 표현한다. 또한 욕구의 실현과정에서 초인적인 힘과 존재가 작용한다고 믿고 그러한 힘이 긍정적으로 작용하길 바란다는 데에서 믿음의 대상으로 나타나고 있다. 욕구와 믿음을 바탕으로 만들어진 속신은 여고생집단이라는 또래집단의 결속력을 강화시키는 기능을 하는데, 이때 속신은 사회에 속해있는 다른 집단들과 여고생집단을 구분시키는 지표가 되며 그들만의 집단을 지키는 규율과 규범이 되고 있다. 한편 가상공간을 통해서 일방적으로만 전달되는 공부와 시험에 관한 속신은 오락과 유희의 대상이 되기도 한다.

영어초록

Students who are about to take important examinations such as college entrance exams like to believe that wheat-glutens or glutinous rice cakes can help them obtain good results on their exams. We define those vulgar superstitions related to results of studying, grades, tests, Korean SAT tests, college entrance exams, aptitudes, intelligence, and course life with certain behavioral or conditional circumstances as vulgar superstitions regarding studies and exams. In order to investigate high school girls’ vulgar superstitions, three-step field tests were conducted on students who attended Seoul Jungang Girls’ High School located at Bukahyeon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, Korea. The first step entailed random interviews of selected students after school. Then all students were interviewed followed by an intensive interview on chosen students based on their year and religion. We collected 7,547 vulgar superstitions from this investigation and 828 of them were related to studies and exams.

Vulgar superstitions regarding studies and exams tell us about the result of studies and exams in terms of eating habits, washing habits, body care, locations and directions, personal goods, stationeries and so on. The results show that positive vulgar superstitions have more diverse aspects in terms of results than negative ones. If all vulgar superstitions are compared, the difference will be minimized because negative ones are well-recognized despite their simplicity. This proves that negative vulgar superstitions have been handed down over a long period of time and, have been penetrating into our daily lives on a widespread basis. On the other hand, positive vulgar superstitions have been poorly understood because modified versions and newly created ones with continuously changing meanings have reached the main stream.

High school girls are exposed to vulgar superstitions among their peer groups, in their family and by the mass media. When vulgar superstitions regarding studies and exams are handed down in a peer group, they confirm their common goal as a group and outburst becomes fierce in relation to achieving their goal. Also, vulgar superstitions present common standards for achieving their goal in a peer group. Vulgar superstitions tend to be relatively reliable when handed down within the family where the mother is the transmitter in general. Finally, vulgar superstitions from the mass media are more likely ‘something we just know about’ which have nothing to do with the real life of high school girls. In this case, vulgar superstitions appear to materialize from the mass media or commercialized as ‘exam goods.’ Also, it is clear that vulgar superstitions are highly credible and acceptable when they are delivered via the Internet by a ‘virtual community’ which could share common interests or by an informer whose identity is disclosed.

Vulgar superstitions regarding studies and exams serve to express desire and belief, strengthening unity power of peer groups, and offer amusement and entertainment. Most of all, they represent high school girls’ desire of obtaining positive results on their studies and exams, particularly to achieve self-realization through studies and exams. With their desire, they believe in the supernatural power and existence from which they expect to get some positive effects. The function of vulgar superstitions based on desire and belief is strengthening the power of unity within high school girls’ peer groups. These superstitions could be the indicator in distinguishing one high school girls’ peer group from others. These could also serve as regulations and standards for protecting their own group. In the meantime, the unilaterally delivered vulgar superstitions regarding studies and exams from virtual spaces become the object of amusements and entertainments.
