초록

한국의 도시빈민은 1960년대 급격한 산업화와 함께 증가해 서울의 여러 지역에서 판자촌을 형성해 살아왔다. 그들은 값싼 노동력을 통해 국가의 경제적 성장을 뒷받침했지만,정부에게 도시의 미관을 해치는 존재들로 취급되었다. 그들이 사는 판자촌은 농촌에서 이주해 온 사람들부터 도시 생활에 실패하고 밑바닥의 삶으로 추락해버린 사람들까지 다양한 인간군상이 모여있는 공동체 공간이었다. 거칠고 억척스럽게 삶을 이어 나가며 도시의 삶, 서울의 삶을 견뎌내고 있는 공간이기도 했다. 이러한 도시빈민은 글을 통해 직접 자신의 삶에 대해 드러내고 제거되어야 할 공간에도 사람들의 삶이 있음을 보여주고자 했다. 그러나 영화화되는 순간 빈민의 삶은 서민의 삶이 되거나, 매춘부의 삶으로 변경된다. 그로 인해 빈민의 삶은 축소되고 대상화되며 애상화된다. 어떻게든 살아내겠다는 그들의 삶의 의지는 동정받아야 할 것이 된다. 게다가 빈민의 삶을 가장 위협하는 철거에 대한 저항과 분노는 재현되지 못한다. 철거의 주체가 검열의 주체이기에 빈민촌의 철거는 더 이상 검열이 되지 않는 시기가 되어서야 스크린에 재현될 수 있었다. 그런데도 철거를 지시했던 국가권력은 여전히 드러나지 않는다. 빈민의 삶은 국가로부터 보호받지 못했고, 빈민을 돌보는 자리는 국가가 아닌 종교가 대신하게 된다. 빈민 선교에 적극적이었던 기독교가 도시 빈민을 보살피는 아버지의 역할을 맡았던 것이다. 그러나 자본주의를 적극적으로 받아들였던 세속주의적 기독교는 국가와 마찬가지로 빈민촌 철거에 앞장섰고, 이에 대한 도시빈민의 분노 역시 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

During the rapid industrialization in the 1960s, Korea’s urban poor began to establish shantytowns across various districts of Seoul. These communities played a crucial role in the nation’s economic progress by providing inexpensive labor; yet, they were often viewed by the government as unsightly impediments to the city’s development. The shantytowns became a melting pot for diverse individuals, including rural migrants and those to succeed in the urban environment, who found themselves living on the margins of society. These shantytowns were not just physical spaces, but also sites where the urban poor, characterized by their resilience and toughness, continued to endure the harsh realities of city life in Seoul. Through their writings, they aimed to shed light on their existence and emphasizethateven in the areas targeted for eradication, there were vibrant lives and communities worth acknowledging. However, once their stories were adapted for film, the lives of the urban poor were often either reinterpreted as the experiences of the broader working class or reduced to depictions of prostitution. This cinematic transformation led to the marginalization, objectification, and sentimentalization of their true struggles. The raw determination of these individuals to persevere against all odds was frequently misconstrued as merely deserving of pity. Furthermore, the resistance and anger of the urban poor toward demolitions that posed the greatest threat to their lives were notably absent from cinematic portrayals. As the authorities responsible for these demolitions were also in charge of censorship, the depiction of shantytown demolitions only appeared on the screen when the censorship restrictions eased. Despite this, the state power that orchestrated the demolition remained conspicuously absent from these narratives. The urban poor received no protection from the state, and . Christianity, especially through active missionary efforts among the urban poor, stepped into the role of a paternal figure, offering care and support in place of the absent state. However, secularized Christianity, which had fully embraced capitalist ideals, was complicit in leading efforts to demolish shantytowns, just as the state had done. This complicity ignited anger among the urban poor, a sentiment clearly reflected in their reactions.
