초록

The article is a writing of study for the recognition of frenchmen about Korea before 19th century. We find the recognition of frenchmen about Korea in books and maps which frenchmen described before 19th century. The first meeting between frenchmen and koreans go back to 13th century. But we do not find frenchmen's description about Korea before 18th century. Some frenchmen described something about Korea in 18th century. They are François Noël, Jean Frederic Bernard, Jean-Baptiste Régis, Jean-Baptiste du Halde, l'Abbé Prévos, Pierre François Xavier, Voltaire and Lapérouse. Their frenchmen vaguely recognised Korea. But they recognised Korea more and more depending on the flow of time.
When we can find firstly Korea on maps which frenchmen made? We find firstly Korea shape and its name ‘Coray’ on the map which a french cartographer Nicolas Sanson made in 1650. But he drew Korea as an island on his map. However we find Korea as a peninsula on the map which he made in 1667 and 1670. And we find firstly the name of ‘Oriental Sea’ on the map which a french cartographer Nicolas de Fer made in 1705 and the name of ‘Sea of Korea’ on the map which a french cartographer Châtelain made in 1719.
