    초록

This paper examined the Mycenaean Linear B tablets and the ‘people’ revealed on them, focusing on the following three points.
    1. The palace centers which used the Linear B tablets show remarkable similarity and uniformity in their economic and social system, material life and the ‘people,’ though the palace sites were widely dispersed in time and space. So we can assume that the political entities flourished in Mainland and Crete had nearly the same palatial system.
    2. The peoples on the tablets can be divided into three categories. The first one includes a variety of central and local officials performing their works for the palace centers. Wanax was a dominating figure on top of the bureaucratic structure. However, he was not an autocratic ruler such as Egyption pharaoh and Hittite king but chief of the polity and supreme commander of the power elites. Essentially there were no differences in their ownership of the land, in religious role, or in the control of the artisans and army between wanax and other high officials.
The second category of the people was the local inhabitants who were obliged to pay tax and enlisted for the military duty. They had to provide the labour such as raising sheep or farming for the center. They were organized in corporate body called dāmos, an entity, taking part in religious activities and awarding its land to some high officials. Dāmos was not a passive object controlled one-sidedly by the center, but performed various functions as an autonomous local body.
The working group directly controlled by the palace center was the third category of the people. It includes various groups of the dependent workers, which was ranged from the bronze-smiths and very specialized workers making prestige goods and artifacts to the slaves completely relied on the palace for their food.
    3. The third dependant working group played a significant role for the palace economy and as a main source of the Mycenaean state power. The solidarity of the elites and the close relationships among the palaces were another factors strengthening their power.
