영화 <미나리>에 나타난 디아스포라의 문제적 징후들과 내포된 담론들 (The Diaspora's Problematic Signs and Implicit Discourses in the Movie Minari)

초록

재미교포감독의 자전적 이주서사로 알려진 영화 <미나리>는 한국 배우의 아카데미상 수상 소식과 함께 한국관객과 미국관객 모두에게 호평받았다. 이 영화에서는 이국적이면서도 목가적인 미국의 풍경 속에서 절망과 희망을 함께 하는 가족의 분투가 부각되며 디아스포라가 낭만적으로 묘사된다. 하지만 본고에서는 디아스포라가 결코 낭만일 수는 없으리라는 전제하에 이 영화에서 인종차별이나 혐오 등이 전혀 묘사되지 않은 것에 대한 문제의식을 가지고 낭만화된 디아스포라 내부에 숨겨진 중층적인 의미담론들을 찾고자 한다. 이를 통해 미국사회와 한국사회의 현재를 진단한다.
이 영화에서는 제이콥의 인정욕망 배경에 있는 적자생존과 승자독식의 신자유주의와 미국의 이민정책인 동화주의에 대한 비판적 시각이 보이지 않는다. 제이콥은 미국의 가치를 적극적으로 수용하며 복지부재의 사회적 시스템을 고발하기보다는 가족을 중심으로 한 자력구제로 난관을 돌파하려 한다. 이 과정에서 인정욕망에 사로잡힌 남성성은 포용하고 헌신하는 여성에 대한 남성판타지에 함몰된다. 미국의 질서에 대한 비판보다는 이를 적극적으로 수용하며 가부장적 가족주의로 갈등을 봉합하는 방식은 미국 관객에게도 불편하지 않게 다가갈 수 있는 대중영화의 안전한 선택이 되었다.
미국의 풍경 속에 새겨진 한국의 정서를 담고 있는 <미나리>는 낯선 땅에 뿌리내린 희망을 말하지만, 그 희망 속에는 퇴행성이 숨겨져 있다. 아메리칸드림이 배반과 절망을 담고 있듯이 코리안 드림 또한 그러하다. 영화 <미나리>가 낭만적으로 형상화한 가족애와 아메리칸드림과 디아스포라의 내부에 자신과 타자를 모두 파괴하는 남성성과 남성판타지, 문명에서 야만으로 역행하는 적자생존 무한경쟁의 이데올로기가 존재한다. 영화 <미나리>의 성취 이면에 드러나지 않았던 의미의 층들을 분석하고 이를 통해 미국사회와 한국사회의 현재를 진단했다는 것에 본 논문의 의의가 있으며 이는 디아스포라를 형상화한 여타 텍스트에 대한 분석에도 유의미한 시각이 될 수 있으리라 기대한다.

영어초록

The movie Minari, known as the autobiographical migration narrative of the Korean American director, was well received by Korean audiences and American audiences along with the news of the Korean actor's Academy Award. In this film, the struggle of the family with despair and hope in the exotic and idyllic American landscape is highlighted and the diaspora is romanticized. However, under the premise that the diaspora can never be romantic, this thesis analyzes the hierarchical meanings hidden inside the romanticized diaspora with a critical mind that racism and hatred are not portrayed at all in this film. Through this, we can examine the current situation of American society and Korean society and examine the similar context of American Dream and Korean Dream.
The background of Jacob's desire for recognition is the neoliberalism of survival of the fittest and winner-take-all, and assimilationism, the immigration policy of the United States. Jacob actively accepts the values of the United States and tries to break through the difficulties through self-help relief centered on the family rather than accusing the social system of welfare absence. In this process, the masculinity captivated by the desire for recognition falls into the male fantasy of embracing and devoting women. In addition, the admiration of the American film industry for the character of Soon- Za has a lot of room for the otherization of non-white women. Rather than criticizing the American order, the movie actively accepted it and closed the conflict with patriarchal familism, so it was not inconvenient for American audiences as well.
Minari, which contains Korean sentiments carved in the American landscape, refers to hope rooted in a strange land, but degeneracy is hidden in that hope. Just as the American Dream contains treachery and despair, so does the Korean Dream. Inside the family love and the American dream and the diaspora romanticized by the movie Minari, there are masculinity and male fantasy that destroy both oneself and others, and ideology of infinite competition for survival of the fittest that goes against civilization to barbarism. Southeast Asian women who migrated to Korea are typified in a similar way, just as Korean women are typified in a way that they are different from contemporary white women. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes the layers of meaning derived from Minari behind the achievement of the movie Minari and diagnoses the present of American society and Korean society through it. It is expected that this will be a meaningful perspective on the analysis of other texts that embody the diaspora.
