최초의 한국찬송가집들의 번역자, 작사자들에 대한 연구 I (A Study on the translators and writers of the first korean hymnals I)

초록

In 1890s the first three hymnals of the evangelical church in Korea were published. They were ‘Chanmiga’(1892) of Methodist Church, ‘Chanyangga’(1894) and ‘Chanseongsi’(1895) of Presbyterian Church. They had been supplemented many times before the two denominations put both hymnals together and published ‘Chansongga’(1908). In this study, I explore how the foreign missionaries contributed as translators or writers to the editions of the Hymnals. The first purpose of the study is to find out the exact numbers of their works. There are some informations about this matter in the prefaces of the hymnals and in the christian newspapers, including 'Chosun Christian Newsletter' published by H. G. Appenzeller in February 1897 and 'Christian Newspaper' published by H. G. Underwood in April 1897. But finding out the exact numbers of the works is not easy, because the sources often do not accord with each other and the descriptions of the newspapers are not always correct. The second purpose of this study is to identify the original works of the foreign missionaries written in Korean. There are some earlier studies about this. But they are not in agreement on this matter because of the inaccuracy of the hymnals and newspapers they based on. The vast amount of work let me treat this subject in two papers. This time I explore only the missionaries who worked actively as translator and writer. The missionaries who worked only as translater will be treated next time.
