Effects of Exercise Program based on Voluntary Selection on the Exercise Time-Use and Basic Fitness for the Intellectual Disabilities

This study examined the effect of voluntary selection of an exercise program for the people with intellectual disabilities in a residential care facility. Eight participants voluntarily each selected on the types of exercises and forms depicted on picture cards. A survey evaluated the type and form of exercise selected, as well as each participant’s total exercise time and frequency. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure was used to evaluate performance and satisfaction. Muscle strength, flexibility, weight, and body mass index were measured. The average frequency of selection increased for the following exercise types: stretching, walking, muscle strength exercise using a mat or a gym ball, and machine exercises. The average frequency of selecting group exercises increased more than that of selecting individual exercises. Performance, satisfaction, total exercise time and frequency, muscle strength, and flexibility increased and weight and BMI decreased. Thus, in order to promote health and quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities in a residential care facility, an exercise program which is a based on selection of participants should be considered and such program could be applied in residential facilities as one of the routine tasks.
