The purpose of this study is to analyze the liberal acceptance of Hegel as an influence behind the creation of ‘British Idealism’ in the nineteenth century. G. W. F. Hegel is regarded as a representative philosopher who criticized liberalism, and specifically pointed out problems in classical liberalism, such as its misunderstanding of freedom and atomic individualism. Hegel’s philosophy also played an important role in the development of liberal philosophy and was accepted in various ways by liberalists. Hegel’s philosophy took time to be accepted in British society due to political and cultural factors and the intricacies of the Hegelian philosophy itself. However, as Scottish and then English philosophers began to introduce Hegel’s philosophy as a way to counter the utilitarianism and common sense schools, Hegel began to receive recognition in British society. In Balliol College, Hegel’s philosophy was accepted as a way to overcome the limitations of existing British political philosophy. Consequently, Hegel could be highlighted as a major figure in philosophical history. British scholars read and accepted Hegel based on their traditions. The British intellectuals’ liberal acceptance of the Hegelian philosophy was relevant in British society at the time, which was facing extreme poverty and social and political polarization. The acceptance of Hegelian philosophy legitimized the role and duty of the state. Hegelian philosophy allowed the state to intervene in the market, and to establish welfare policies for the unemployed, the elderly, and children.
