초록

본 연구는 만화라는 원 소스가 다양한 매체 변화에 따라 이동했던1910년대 미국을 중심으로 애니메이션과 코믹스크립의 역사를 통해 애니메이티드 카툰을 재 고찰한 것이다.
연구의 시작은 만화의 많은 멀티 유즈 사례 중에서 애니메이션으로의 매체 이동에 한정짓는 것에 있었다. 1890년대에서 1900년대 초반은 영사기의 발전으로 인해 동영상 매체의 발전이 두드러진 때였다. 이러한 동영상의 역사 속에서 만화의 멀티유즈 사례를 찾을 수 있었다. 그것은 미국 신문 산업에 근간을 두고 발전했던 코믹스트립이 동영상 매체와 만나 탄생하게 된 애니메이티드 카툰이었다. 애니메이티드 카툰을 연구함으로 해서 만화가 원소스 멀티유즈의 원형임을 보여주는 최초의 사례임과 동시에 대중들에게 혼동하여 인식되어온 애니메이션의 명확한 정의를 하는데 의의를 두었다. 또한 만화와 애니메이션이 독립적인 예술 콘텐츠의 한 분야로서 발전적인 체계성을 갖출 수 있는 이론적 바탕이 되는 것에 목적을 두었다.
애니메이티드 카툰은 만화의 원소스 멀티유즈의 효시이자, 2D 셀 애니메이션 중심의 전통 애니메이션의 기틀을 마련하고, 산업화, 대중화된 콘텐츠로서의 애니메이션의 출발점에 서 있다는 의의를 갖게 된다.이는 실험 애니메이션 위주의 장르가 주를 이루고 있는 유럽 애니메이션과 전통 애니메이션 장르의 미국 애니메이션의 성격 차이를 나타내게 된 근본적인 이유라는 의의도 갖고 있다. 이에 따른 사례 연구로서 당시 신문 연재 만화가이자, 애니메이터였던 윈저 멕케이를 중심으로 애니메이션 초기 작가와 작품들을 분석해보고, 애니메이션 역사 속에서 다소 과소평가됐던 윈저 멕케이의 의의를 다시 한 번 돌아보게 하는 계기를 마련하였다.
위와 같은 애니메이티드 카툰의 연구는 본 논문의 목적에 따라 만화가 독립된 콘텐츠중에 단연 으뜸인 것을 확고히 하였다. 애니메이티드 카툰의 특성과 의의를 살펴보면서 그동안 연구되어지지 않았던 애니메이티드 카툰이라는 명확한 개념을 매체간의 이동이 시작되었던 1880년대에서 1910년대 미국을 중심으로 연구하여 이론화시켰다.

영어초록

This study intends to reconsider the animated cartoon through the histories of animation and comic strip in the center of America in the 1910's when the one source of cartoon moved along the changes of diverse media.
The study starts from limiting the movement of cartoon only to the animation among its multi-use. From the 1890's till the beginning of the 1900's, the development of movies was protruded due to the invention of projectors. In the history of this movie development, the example of the cartoon's multi-use can be found. That was the very animated cartoon born with the situation that the comic strip developed based on the American newspaper industry encountered the medium of movie. This study on the animated cartoon shows that the cartoon is the first example of an original form for multi-use and has a purpose of making a clear definition of animation which has been vaguely recognized by people up to now. Moreover, it intends to provide theoretical background for the cartoon and animation to be established as a field of independent art contents with developmental systematicity.
This animated cartoon has meanings as a first instance of the cartoon's one source multi-use, and to lay the groundwork of the traditional animation represented by the 2D cell animation, and that it stands at the starting point of animation as an industrialized and popularized content. This also has a meaning that it was the basic reason for the characteristic differences between the European animation which mainly has genres focusing on the experimental animation and the American animation that has genres of the traditional animation. This study analyzed initial animation writers and their works as a case study in the center of Winsor McCay, a comic strip cartoonist and animator at that time; thus, it provided an opportunity to reconsider him and find his roles that have been somewhat underestimated in the animation history.The study on the animated cartoon has firmly proved that the cartoon is the best of independent contents according to the purpose of it. As examining the animated cartoon's features and meanings, the concept of the animated cartoon which had not been explored before was studied clearly in the center of America from the 1880's till the 1910's when the movement between media started, and it was theorized as well.
