악의 정체성과 예술의 의미: 안드리치와 크를레쟈의 고야 비평 비교연구 (The Identity of Evil and the Meaning of Art: Francisco Goya in the Works of Andrić and Krleža)

근대 이후 발칸 서부 문화를 대표해 온 문화적 아이콘인 안드리치와 크를레쟈가 쓴 고야에 관한 평론문은 두 작가의 창작 경력 전반에서 삶의 부조리성과 예술의 의미에 대한 이해와 이에 대한 예술적 형상화의 방식이 여전히 활발히 모색되고 있었을 때에 집필된 것으로, 그 소재가 되는 고야의 전기와 작품의 인상은 두 작가의 세계관과 예술창작에 적지 않은 영향을 끼쳤을 것으로 보인다. 두 작가의 평론문은 20세기 발칸 출신 작가들이 한 세기 전의 유럽 예술가와 나눈 ‘초현실적 대화’이며, 그들과 고야의 시선이 어우러진 독특한 ‘지평의 융합’이다. 인간과 삶에 대한 환멸과 비애, 예술을 통한 악에 대한 저항 등 유사한 세계관을 서로 다른 양식으로 표현했던 ‘염세주의적 순교자 예술가’로서의 안드리치와 ‘참여주의적 사회평론가 작가’로서의 크를레쟈의 개성은 고야의 생애와 작품에 대한 평가에서도 분명하게 드러난다. 안드리치와 크를레쟈의 고야에 관한 평론문은 악의 기원 및 그 존재 양태에 대한 그들의 문학적 관념과 이에 대한 고야의 회화 이미지 사이의 높은 유사성을 드러낸다. 또한 두 작가의 평론문은 그들이 발칸의 비극적인 역사적 경험을 토대로 형성된 삶에 관한 그들 나름의 통찰, 그리고 이것과 긴밀하게 연관되어 있는 예술의 존재론적 의미와 예술가의 존재방식에 대한 각자의 고유한 견해를 고야의 전기적, 창작적 삶에서 확인하려는 모습을 보여주며, 이런 의미에서 그들의 고야 평론문은 그들 자신의 예술적 세계관과 신념에 대한 재확인이라고까지 말할 수 있다. 안드리치와 크를레쟈는 자신들이 지속적으로 표현했던 악과 사회적 부정의에 대한 관념 및 예술의 의미와 예술가의 운명에 대한 견해를 고야의 작품을 통해 거듭 강조하고 있다. 전체적으로 고야에 관한 평론문에서 고야의 창작을 둘러싼 두 작가의 예술철학은 많은 유사성을 드러내는 한편, 그들의 견해가 미묘하게 갈라지는 지점을 보여준다. 이 점은 그간 안드리치와 크를레쟈의 창작에 대한 비교연구에서 다소 소홀히 다루어져 왔던 '고야 커넥션'의 중요성을 새삼 일깨운다.

his study is devoted to a sort of the comparative consideration of the poetic world-views of the two prominent Western Balkan writers Ivo Andrić and Miroslav Krleža with the focus on their critical essays on the life and works of the Spanish painter Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes. Those essays on Goya were being written around the time when the two Yugoslav writers were still straining to find the answers to the absurdity of life and the meaning of artistic creation, and the ways to describe their own ideas about them artistically. In that time the biography and paintings of Goya seem to have had positive effects on Andrić and Krleža in the establishment of their poetic conceptions of humanity and the life of this world. The problem of evil and the validity of art were explored in detail in the examination of the life and paintings of the Spanish painter in the essays. It is curious that the passages of the essays on Goya reveal the closeness between the authors' evaluations of Goya and their own world-views and artistic convictions that are manifested in their other prose works including belletristic writings. It is necessary to take note of the two Yugoslav writers' efforts to verify their own thoughts about humanity and the end of artistic creation against the biography and the artistic works of Goya in order to comprehend the core meaning of the above mentioned three essays on the Spanish painter. It is surmised that the observations of Goya's life and works gave both Andrić and Krleža strong convictions about their own ideas of history and art. Besides, the opinions of the two Yugoslav writers describe the similarities as well as differences in their essays on Goya. This feature draws our attention to the importance of the Goya connection in the comparative study of Andrić and Krleža. Furthermore, the common features between the two Yugoslav writers reside in the fact that they made efforts to connect Goya's life and works with the genealogy of the epoch-making Modern European thinkers. Besides, as for the theme of the identity of evil and the meaning of artistic creation, the paintings by Goya have become connected to the stream of the intellectual history of Modern Europe through the mediation of the writings of the two representative Yugoslav writers. And the universality of the theme itself that attracted them in their whole life such as Francisco Goya in turn invites us to read their oeuvres not so much within the confines of Balkan literature as in the context of the European civilization.
