The education of Olympe de Gouges was very much neglected, but the nature gave her, with the beauty, a lively imagination and a facile spirit to conceive all affairs. The French Revolution found from her a new enthusiasm. Walls of Paris were covered with placards which were signed by Gouges and in which she had preached the patriotism, the civism, tolerance, conciliation and benefits of liberty. Little indulgent to the queen, Gouges felt on the contrary a kind of tenderness to Louis ⅩⅥ. Gouges regarded Louis ⅩⅥ as "a father of the people," the guarantor of order and peace of France.
Always feminist and revolutionary, but anti-terrorist, constitutional monarchist in early years of the Revolution, Olympe de Gouges disapproves of the attitude of Louis ⅩⅥ to which she suspects its duplicity and she resolutely condemns him to the announcement of his attempt of escaping. The shock was such that she suddenly felt herself republican. This grave action of the royal family must have entirely shaken the monarchistic opinion. Gouges at this point dares to speak of traitor, designating Louis ⅩⅥ.
We can state then that her sympathetic feelings were going towards those which represent the Gironde. The glory and the independence of the French Republic was her most ardent desire. Always be ready to sacrifice her liberty, even her life, for the fatherland, Gouges did not fear to solicit for the dangerous favor to defend Louis ⅩⅥ in front of the National Convention. She expected that any true republican would not vote for king's death, and that the majority of the people would vote for his exile.
Sympathetic feelings of Olympe de Gouges for Girondists brought her life into danger. Like Brissot, Condorcet and Vergniaud, Gouges experienced a tragic end, because she was the untirable propagandist of Girondist Movement. The influence of Gouges directly exercised great influence on the public opinion through her campaigns of placards in favor of republicanism. The political tendency of Gouges, in general, followed the process of the French Revolution. Gouges was the only decapitated woman in the French Revolution, on account of publications and diffusions of political writings.
