초록

이 논문은 1970년대의 사회문화적 상황과 그 상황을 규정한 정치체제에 대한 이해를 토대로, 당대에 평단과 독서층으로부터 모두 주목받았던 이청준과 조세희의『당신들의 천국』과『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』에서 드러나는 권력과 사회에 대한 형상화 방식이 각기 의미하는 바가 무엇인가 하는 점을 주요한 해석지점으로 설정하였다.
이청준의『당신들의 천국』은 권력의 외부성을 전제하고 그 실정적 지배력을 승인한 바탕 위에서 공동체가 성립되는 진정한 조건이란 무엇인가 하는 점에 주목한다. ‘자생적 운명 공동체’로 규정되는 이 화해로운 삶의 터전은, 권력이 선의지를 본질로 행사되어야 한다는 당위적 명제를 기초로 한 세계상으로 이해된다. 권력을 행사하는 자는 그 힘의 실질적 행사에 있어서뿐만 아니라 그 내면에 있어서도 승인 욕망을 지녀서는 안 되며 피지배자들의 인간적 존엄과 자유는 어떤 조건 하에서도 제한된 방식으로 허용되는 것이어서는 안 된다는 소설의 주제는 이청준이 이해한 올바른 사회의 이미지였다. 하지만 사회에 대한 이러한 접근방식은 권력의 비대칭성을 전제하고 있기 때문에 국민-독자는 언제나 피지배자의 대상적 위치에서 벗어나기 어렵다는 한계를 지닌다. 여기에는 정치적 권리를 요구하는 시민적 주체의 자리가 마련되기 어렵다.
반면 조세희의『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』에서 제시된 세계는 자본주의적 배분관계에 따라 내적으로 분할된 사회라 할 수 있다. 난장이, 앉은뱅이, 곱추 등 불구로로 표상되는 사회적 약자들은 자신의 생존권을 지켜내지 못하며 다만 그 내면에 안과 밖의 경계를 넘어서고자 하는 욕망을 보존한다. 그들은 자본주의 사회의 위법한 질서를 부정함으로써 살인과 같은 악을 저지르게 되지만 법의 비대칭성적 조건 하에서 악은 그들에게만 해당하는 것이 아니라 그들이 속한 세계 전체에 퍼져 있는 것이다. 이 악의 문제를 조세희는 70년대 잔혹한 현실 내에서는 해소되지 못하는 비극으로 파악한다. 그런 이유로 소설의 결말은 합리성을 기초로 한 과학과 그것이 지향하는 이상적인 미래상을 꿈꾸는 것으로 나아갈 수밖에 없다. 이는『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』이 사회를 본원적으로 분할하는 그 근원에 정치적 권력이 내재하고 있다는 것을 비판할 수 없었다는 점에서 나타난 한계로 이해된다.
결론적으로 이청준은 공동체 규정에 있어서 권력이 어떠한 힘을 행사하는가 하는 점을 철저히 인식하고 있었던 반면 그것을 부정될 수 없는 조건으로 이해함으로 해서 정치적 권리를 가진 시민적 주체의 자리를 확보하지 못하였다. 조세희는 갈등하는 사회적 이해관계가 70년대 사회현실 속에서 적나라하게 드러나는 것을 명확하게 인식하고 있었으나 그 사회적 대립을 구성하는 본질적 힘으로서의 정치 권력의 문제에까지 이르지는 못하였다고 평가될 수 있다.

영어초록

Based on the understanding of the social and cultural situations and the political system that defined them in the 1970s, this study mainly set out to interpret the meanings of ways to embody power and society in Your Heaven by Lee Cheong-jun and A Small Ball Shot Up by A Dwarf by Jo Se-hee, both of which attracted attention from the readers as well as the critics those days.
Your Heaven by Lee Cheong-jun sets a point about the true conditions of a community based on the premise of power's externality and the approval of its actual control.
The reconciliating ground for life defined as an "autonomous community of fate" is understood as an image of world based on the legitimacy that power should be exercised based on good will as the author figured it out in the situation those days. The topic of the novel is that those who exercise power should have no desire for approval on their inner sides as well as in the actual exercise of the power and that the human dignity and freedom of the ruled should not be allowed in a limited way under any circumstances. The topic was the right meaning of society understood by the author.
Such an approach toward society, however, is on the premise of asymmetry in power, which means that the people-readers will always have a difficult time escaping from their object position as the ruled. The place of civic subjects that demand for political rights cannot be established here. A Small Ball Shot Up by A Dwarf by Jo Se-hee, on the other hand, shows a world in which the society is divided internally according to the capitalist distribution relations.
Representing the handicapped, the dwarfs, the crippled, and the hunchbacks fail to protect their own right to live but keep their desire to go beyond the boundary between in and outside as the socially weak. They deny the illegal order of the capitalist society and thus commit such evil as murder, but evil does not apply only to them but is spread across their entire world under the asymmetrical conditions of law. The end of the novel thus moves forward toward the dream of science protected by rationality and an ideal future pursued by the science, which is because the novel does not understand that there is political power inherent in the root that divides the society fundamentally and thus has a limitation of perceiving only internal social confrontations.
In short, Lee Cheong-jun was thoroughly aware of what kind of power was exercised by authority in the community regulations but failed to secure a position for civic subjects with a political right by understanding it as an undeniable condition. Jo Se-hee was clearly aware that the conflict social interests were candidly revealed in the social reality of the 1970s but failed to reach the issue of political power as the essential power to organize such social confrontations.
