영화 <열두 번째 용의자>의 공간창출 방식 －<12인의 성난 사람들>, <오리엔트 특급 살인사건>과의 대비를 중심으로－ (A Study on Space Creation Method in The 12th Suspect: Focusing on the Contrast between 12 Angry Men and Murder on the Orient Express)

초록

본고에서는 일제 청산 없이 닥친 이데올로기 내전의 비극상을 다방 공간의 한정을 통해 효율적으로 재현하기 위해 한국영화 <열두 번째 용의자>가 그랜드호텔 형식 영화인 <12인의 성난 사람들>과 <오리엔트 특급 살인사건>을 함께 원용하고 있음에 주목한다. 그랜드호텔 형식 영화란 1932년 아카데미 작품상을 수상한 에드먼드 굴딩 감독의 <그랜드 호텔>(Grand Hotel, 112분, 1932)의 공간 창출 방식에서 연원한 영화 양식으로, 공간 한정을 통해 이야기의 확산을 방지하고 중심화소에 집중케 하는 기능을 가진 것으로 인식되어 왔다.
매카시즘과 인종차별 등 1950년대를 횡행하는 미국 시민의식의 일단을 정밀히 포착해 카메라에 담아낸 <12인의 성난 사람들>은 배심원실이란 갇힌 공간에서의 논증과정을 통해 시시각각 변모하는 각개 인물의 심리 추이를 짚어내는 동시에 궁극적으로 이들의 인간적 정체성을 적나라하게 노정함으로써 공간한정을 통해 인간탐구에 주력하는 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 본질에 충실히 부합하고 있다.
일견 상호관련성이 없는 승객들을 한 공간에 모이게 하여 ‘데이지 유괴사건과 미국 거주’라는 그들의 공통분모를 유추케 함으로써 우연히 조우한 열차 동승객이라는 그들의 위장된 정체성을 벗겨가는 <오리엔트 특급 살인사건>은 열차공간의 폐쇄성을 통해 살인사건의 단서를 연역해낸다는 점에서 공간한정의 틀 안에서 플롯의 확산을 방지하고 각개 인물군상에 주력할 수 있게 하는 그랜드호텔 형식 영화의 본분을 역시 충분히 수행하고 있는 것으로 상정된다.
일제 강점기와 한국전쟁이란 시대의 굴곡 속에서 자신의 정체성을 왜곡시켜야 했던 한국인의 비애를 다방 공간의 폐쇄성을 통해 카메라에 옮긴 <열두 번째 용의자>는 다방내 인물 상호간의 숨겨졌던 인간관계가 하나씩 드러나는 과정에서 수사관과 용의자, 용의자 상호간의 동일공간 속 표정 대비를 통해 숨기려는 자와 밝히려는 자 사이의 심리적 갈등과 견제를 절묘히 포착하고 있는 전반부와 ‘친일 행위자에 대한 응징’과 ‘신분을 세탁한 친일행위자의 자작극’이란 이중의 음모를 다방 내 인물들의 인과적 연계성을 매개로 밝혀가는 후반부로 나뉜다. 따라서 전반부에는 공간을 한정함으로써 시시각각 변모하는 인물들의 표정 변화와 그 대비를 통해 심리 포착에 주력하는 <12인의 성난 사람들>에서의 인간 탐구적 경향이 두드러지며 후반부에는 열차칸의 동일 공간에 탑승한 인물 상호간의 인과관계를 추론해 살인사건의 해결단서로 활용하는 <오리엔트 특급 살인사건>에서의 수사 추리극의 그림자가 진하게 드리운다.
따라서 한국 영화 <열두 번째 용의자>는 법정극 <12인의 성난 사람들>의 인물구현 방식과 밀실 수사극 <오리엔트 특급 살인사건>의 수사 방식을 습합하여 그랜드호텔 형식을 한국적 소재에 적용한 영화로 결론지을 수 있다.

In this paper, it is noted that the Korean film The 12th Suspect uses Grand Hotel style film, 12 Angry Men and Murder on the Orient Express in order to efficiently reproduce the tragedy of the ideological civil war without the Japanese liquidation through the limited space of the coffee shop. Grand Hotel style film is a film style derived from the space creation method of Grand Hotel directed by Edmund Goulding, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1932, and has been recognized as having a function to prevent the spread of the story and focus on the central pixel through space limitation.
12 Angry Men captures precisely a segment of the U.S. civic consciousness prevalent in the 1950s, including McCarthyism and racism, and captures it on camera. This film faithfully fits the essence of the Grand Hotel style film, which focuses on human exploration through space restrictions by pointing out the psychological trends of individual characters that change every moment through the argument process in the confined space, the jury room.
Murder on the Orient Express sheds their disguised identity as accidental train passengers by bringing irrelevant passengers together in one space to infer their common denominator of ‘Daisy Abduction and U.S. Residence.’ Given that this film dedicates clues to murder through the closure of train space, it is thought that it also fulfills the main role of a grand hotel-style film that prevents the spread of plots and focuses on individual groups of characters within a space-limited framework.
The 12th Suspect captures the sorrow of Koreans, who had to distort their identity amid the ups and downs of the Japanese occupation and the Korean War, through the closure of the coffee shop space. This film is divided into two parts.
In the first half, psychological conflicts and checks between those who try to hide and reveal through facial expressions in the same space between investigators, suspects, and suspects are exquisitely captured in the process of revealing hidden human relationships one by one. In the second half, the double conspiracy of “punishment for pro-Japanese actors” and “self-creation of pro-Japanese actors who washed their identity” is revealed through the causal connection of the characters in the coffee shop. Therefore, in the first half, the human exploratory tendency in 12 Angry Men, which focuses on capturing psychology through changes in facial expressions of characters that change every moment by limiting space, is prominent. In the second half, the shadow of the investigative mystery play in Murder on the Orient Express, which deduces the causal relationship between the characters on board in the same space of the train compartment and uses it as a clue to the murder case, is strongly revealed..
Therefore, the Korean film The 12th Suspect can be concluded as a film that applies the Grand Hotel style to Korean incident by combining the method of the embodiment of a character in the legal drama 12 Angry Men and the method of investigating in the investigation drama Murder on the Orient Express.
