두 편의 창작창극에 드러난 전통성과 현대성 - <어매 아리랑>과 <흐엉의 희망일기>를 중심으로 (The originality and modernity revealed in two “creative Chang-geuk” - focused on “Mother's arirang” and “Huong's hope diary”)

초록

이 논문은, 호남 지역에서 최근 공연된 두 편의 창작창극을 대상으로 삼아, 그 전통성과 현대성을 분석하기 위하여 쓴 것이다. 대상이 된 작품들은 <어매 아리랑>과 <흐엉의 희망일기>이다. 두 작품을 분석하기 위한 기준은 서사구조상의 균형감, 결말처리와 주제의 노출 정도, ‘눈 대목’ 판소리를 비롯한 옛 소리의 재활용, 시공간 이동을 비롯한 형상화 방식 등이다. 분석 결과 확인한 바는 아래와 같다.
첫째, 두 작품의 전개방식은 시간 순서를 충실히 따르고 있다. <어매아리랑>은 캐릭터 중심의 압도적인 중심서사를 통해서 전통적 창극의 관습을 유지하고 있다. <흐엉의 희망일기>에서는 현대성을 구현하기 위해 에피소드의 생략과 중첩 등을 시도하고 있으나, 부적절한 생략과 왜곡 현상이 가끔 보인다.
둘째, 두 작품 모두 보조적 서사가 빈약하며, 화려하고 장식적인 결말처리 방식을 택하고 있다. 이는 전통 창극의 관습을 그대로 유지하려는 일종의 '오마쥬'적 설정으로 보이지만, 작품 내용의 현대적 성격에 비추어 볼 때 적절한 선택인지에 대해서는 더 깊은 논쟁이 필요해 보인다.
셋째, 두 작품 모두 판소리 ‘눈 대목’을 활용해서 장면을 극대화하려 하고 있으나 때로 부적절한 인용 장면도 발견된다. 주인공의 처지와 정서에 잘 부합하게 인용하는 경우도 있지만, 집단 장면처럼 시공간적 배경에 어울리지 않게 인용하기도 한다. 이 경우 플롯 상의 일관성과 개연성을 훼손할 우려가 있다.
넷째, 시공간을 배치하고 장면을 전환하는 방식에 있어서 두 작품 모두 영화적 기법을 적극적으로 차용하고 있다. 하지만 현대성에의 과도한 집착은 오히려 극의 본질을 훼손할 수도 있음을 지적하였다. 또한 두 작품 모두 비현실적인 인물을 활용해서 중요한 정보를 전달하거나 주인공의 정서적 상황을 극대화하여 보여주는 전통적 방식을 택하고 있음을 확인하였다.
결론적으로 두 작품은 당대의 현실에서 소재를 취하고 다양한 미디어의 활용을 통해서 형상화 방식을 다변화하는 등 현대적 창극의 면모를 추구하고 있음을 확인하였다. 동시에 주인공을 둘러싼 중심서사 위주의 진행이나 장식적 결말, 주제의 과도한 노출, 비현실적 인물의 활용 등의 측면에서는 여전히 전통창극의 관습을 유지하고 있는 것으로 분석하였다.

영어초록

This article has been written with the aim to analyze the originality and modernity of two “creative Chang-geuk” that were recently performed in Ho-nam district. The main texts that were analyzed were “Mother's arirang” (2013.5) by [Jeon-buk provincial institute for Korean traditional performing arts] and “Huong's hope diary” by [Jeon-nam institute for Korean traditional performing arts].
The main criteria for the analysis of these two texts included the narrative balance, ending technique, main theme exposure, embodiment method, reuse of traditional 'Nun Daemok' pansori , and time-space transitions. The results of the analysis are as follows.
1. The scene lists of both texts follow a time-sequence. “Mother's arirang” maintains the conventions of the traditional Chang-geuk through a strongly prepared main-narrative (“constituent event” or “core”). “Huong's hope diary” tries to make use of ellipses and distortions in some of its episodes in order to create a sense of “modernity,” but sometimes this approach seems inappropriate.
2. The sub-narratives in both texts are so subtle. Moreover, although both texts have a tragic tone, the two texts choose to provide a splendid and : extravagant ending. It seems like a “homage” that maintains the conventions of the traditional Chang-geuk, but it is necessary to have deep discussions about its adequacy, compared to the “modernity” of its story.
3. Both works try to exaggerate several scenes through newly created arias and the 'Nun Daemok' Pansori. Sometimes this technique is successful, especially in “self-reflexive” situations. However, in some mob scenes, 'Nun Daemok' Pansori does not harmonize “time and space,” and this may hurt the consistency and probability of the plot.
4. Both performances borrow movie techniques to change “time and space” and scene transitions. We can say that this is a positive development in some way. However, an excessive obsession toward modernity may hurt the essence of the drama. Moreover, at the same time, both use non-realistic characters to convey important information and show emotional exaggeration ; this is also a unique aspect of originality of the traditional Chang-geuk.
Finally, both texts pursue the modernity of Chang-geuk through contemporary dramatic materials and various embodiment methods. However, at the same time, both texts retain the conventions of the traditional Chang-geuk, such as hero-centric main narrative, splendid and extravagant ending, main them exposure, and reuse of non-realistic characters.
