초록

이 글은 다음과 같은 논의를 담고 있다. 먼저 시몽동의 『기술적 대상들의 존재 양식에 대하여』를 중심으로, 기술적 대상의 고유한 특징 및 그 진화 논리를 분석한다. 시몽동은 기계가 그 진화를 거듭할수록 인간 유기체에 근접해 간다는 사실을 전제로, 또한 기술적 대상이 인간과 자연의 중재자라는 점을 근거로, 기술과 문화, 인간과 기술적 대상 사이에 세워진 견고한 벽을 허물고, 기술과 문화의 통합 및 기술적 대상과 인간의 새로운 관계 맺음을 요청한다. 그는 이 새로운 관계 맺음을 위해 기술적 대상에 대한 명확한 이해, 기술적 산물들에 대한 존경, 그리고 기술에 대한 인간의 무한 책임이 필요하다고 주장한다. 시몽동의 이와 같은 관점은 기술을 도구화하는 종래의 협소한 관점 교정을 위한 기술-논리학(Techno-logik)의 정초로 귀착된다(2). 그러나 시몽동의 기술-논리학은 기술을 그것이 속해 있는 특정한 사회‧경제적 조건들을 사상한 기술-순수주의의 입장을 견지하고 있다는 점에서 탈맥락적이다. 맑스가 분석 대상으로 삼은 19세기의 기술적 환경이 오늘날과 큰 차이를 보임에도 불구하고, 사회‧경제적 네트워크 속에 농축된 기술적 대상에 대한 비판적 독해를 겨냥하는 그의 기술 담론은 이 기술적 대상을 특정 시대의 사회적 관계‧정신적 개념 및 생산방식과 생활양식 등을 내부화하는 방식으로 이해할 수 있는 지평을 마련해 주고 있다. 맑스의 관점에서 기술적 산물들은 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간 간의 관계 방식을 응축하고 있는 거대한 네트워크다. 이 글의 제3장은 기술적 대상의 자본주의적 작동방식에 대한 맑스의 분석을 21세기 현재 지평과 접목하여 시차적으로 독해하는데 할애된다(3). 이 글의 제4장은 이상적인 ‘인간-기계 아상블라주’로서 시몽동의 ‘열린 기계’ 개념을 논한다. 기술적 대상의 진화에 대한 분석을 토대로 시몽동이 인간과 기계의 공존 모델, 즉 ‘인간-기계 짝짓기’를 위해 제안한 이 개념은 인간을 기계들에 대해 책임지는 자, 기계들에 대한 증언자로 호명함으로써 주체와 객체라는 위계질서로 기술과 그 대상들을 외부화하는 종래의 기술관을 교정하고, 인간과 기술적 대상의 이상적 공존 모델을 구체화한다. 이 글의 4장은 시몽동의 ‘열린 기계’ 개념이 갖는 특징 및 한계를 논하는데 할애된다(4). 끝으로 이 글의 결론을 대신하는 5장은 맑스의 기술 담론을 21세기 현재로 끌어와서, 19세기 자본주의를 횡행했던 ‘인간-기계 하이브리드 또는 혼성체’가 어떻게 오늘날에 이르기까지 생명을 연장하면서 산 노동을 집어삼키고 있는지 짚어본다. 그리고 이를 넘어서기 위한 대안으로 맑스의 ‘새롭게 생성된 인간’ 개념을 제안한다. ‘새롭게 생성된 인간’은 기술의 진보가 불러올 미래 사회의 새로운 인간형으로서, 각 개인의 개성이 다방면에서 발달한 전인적 인간(das total entwickelte Individium)을 뜻한다. 이는 기술적 존재자들을 기술적 삶의 형식으로 사유하고자 한 맑스 기술 담론의 종국적 지향점이기도 하다. 결국 시몽동의 ‘열린 기계’와 맑스의 ‘새롭게 생성된 인간’은 우리에게 여전히 ‘낯선 존재자’이자 ‘낯선 권력’으로 마주 서 있는 기술적 존재자들과의 공존 조건에 대한 성찰을 촉구한다는 21세기 기술 시대 기술적 삶의 형식을 사유하기 위한 출발점인 셈이다(5).

This paper engages in a discussion centered around Gilbert Simondon’s perspective on the On the Mode of Existence of Technical Objects, primarily analyzing the unique characteristics of technical objects and their evolutionary logic. Simondon assumes that as machines evolve, they progressively approach organic human entities. Grounding his argument in the mediation role of technical objects between humans and nature, Simondon calls for breaking down the robust barriers established between technology and culture, humans and technical objects, and advocates for a new relationship involving the integration of technology and culture, as well as the establishment of a new connection between technical objects and humans. For this new relationship, he asserts the necessity of a clear understanding of technical objects, respect for technical products, and infinite human responsibility towards technology. His perspective aligns with the foundational principles of Techno-logic, which seeks to rectify the traditional narrow view that instrumentalizes technology. However, Simondon’s Techno-logic is based on decontextualization, adhering to the position of technological-purism that doesn’t contemplates specific societal and economic conditions. Despite the significant differences between the technical environments analyzed by Marx in the 19th century and the present day, Marx’s critical interpretation of technical objects, concentrated within social and economic networks, provides a horizon for understanding these objects by internalizing social relationships, mental concepts, production methods, and lifestyles specific to a particular era. From Marx’s view, technical products embody vast networks encapsulating the relationships between humans and nature, as well as between humans themselves. The third section of this paper devotes itself to a reinterpretation of Marx’s analysis of the capitalistic operation of technical objects in the present 21st century context. The fourth section discusses Simondon’s concept of the “Open Machine” as an ideal “Human-Machine Aassemblage”. Based on the analysis of the evolution of technical objects, Simondon’s proposed concept for the coexistence of humans and machines, namely, “Human-Machine Relation”, corrects the hierarchical order of subject and object, externalizing the traditional technical perspective, by designating humans as responsible agents and witnesses for machines. This section solidifies the ideal model for the coexistence of humans and technical objects. The fourth section analyzes the characteristics and limitations of Simondon’s “Open Machine” concept. Finally, the fifth section, which is the conclusion of this paper, brings Marx’s technical discourse into the contemporary era. It explores how the 19th-century hybrid or composite entity of “Human-Machine Hybrid” that dominated during the age of capitalism continues to prolong life while engulfing labor in the present day. Beyond this examination, the paper suggests Marx’s concept of the “Newly Created Human”(der neue gewordene Mensch) as an alternative. The “Newly Created Human” signifies the future societal prototype, where individual personalities are multi-dimensionally developed (das total entwickelte Individuum), propelled by technological progress. This concept represents the ultimate goal of Marx’s technical discourse, intending to contemplate the forms of technical life of the 21st-century technological age, challenging us to reflect on the coexistence conditions with technological entities as “alien beings” and “alien powers.”
