    초록

The genre of short stories is one of his favorites through which D. H. Lawrence(1885-1930) can express his ideas and thoughts clearly and concisely. Lawrence tries to express his belief of male-and-female relationships against the Great Western Ideas in his short stories implicitly or explicitly. In order to express his belief, he uses various literary devices in his short stories, as most authors do. The aim of this paper is to examine the Sleeping Beauty motif and a stranger motif of his various literary devices in his two short stories, “None of That” and “The Princess” and to search for the relation of his belief and the literary devices, especially the Sleeping Beauty motif and a stranger motif.
During his stay in the New World, especially in New Mexico, his thought was mainly focused on the male superiority against the strong woman’s will-power. His two short stories, “None of That” and “The Princess” are closely related to each other through Mexico. The former's main topic is related to Mexico and the latter was written in Mexico. Mexico is very important for Lawrence’s literary career. It is likely that he gained his ideas from Mexican mythology. He created his strong male superiority against woman's will. In his major short stories he made his male protagonists defeat the female protagonist's will-power. Thus, in one circumstance his female protagonist, Ethel killed herself after being raped in “None of That” and another female protagonist, Dollie came to be languid after the male protagonist, Romero’s death in “The Princess.” This means that Lawrence tries to attack the woman’s will-power and to place much value on male superiority. The most important thing is that Lawrence expressed his belief of male superiority against woman's tough will-power through the Sleeping Beauty motif and a stranger motif.
In these two short stories, “None of That” and “The Princess,” it should not be forgotten that Lawrence exclaimed that woman's will power was the outcome of the Great Western Ideas and that he has tried to negate the harms of Idealism and to attain the ideal state of human beings. Furthermore, it should be emphasized that Lawrence experimented his belief through the Sleeping Beauty motif and a stranger motif of his various literary devices and succeeded to combine his belief with his devices properly.
